PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jason Mathis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul McIntosh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mathis comes to the cage accompanied by On My Way To The Cage. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Paul McIntosh!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McIntosh fails with a takedown attempt.
Mathis changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. McIntosh tries to avoid it but Mathis manages to keep hold of a leg and drag McIntosh to the ground. McIntosh escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

McIntosh moves into the clinch successfully.
Mathis prevents McIntosh from breaking the clinch.
McIntosh missing with knees to the body.
Mathis tries to pull guard but McIntosh holds him up against the cage and eventually Mathis drops back down to his feet.

McIntosh ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. McIntosh no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
McIntosh is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
McIntosh keeping full guard, as Mathis tries to pass.
Mathis would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

McIntosh utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Mathis trying to control the position from guard on top but McIntosh is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
McIntosh thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
McIntosh has his hands on Mathis's head, controlling the position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Mathis doesn't succeed with the takedown
and McIntosh counters with a three punch combo that has Mathis backing up. Mathis nods at McIntosh to acknowledge the strikes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jason Mathis. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mathis shoots and misses

and McIntosh counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Mathis!
Mathis wants to control but McIntosh is having none of it.
McIntosh throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mathis really wants to buck McIntosh off and get back to his feet.

McIntosh goes for an armbar but Mathis turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Mathis.
McIntosh wants to stand and escape but Mathis is having none of it.
McIntosh looks gassed!
Mathis throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as McIntosh works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Mathis looking to sit in guard and control but McIntosh gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Mathis striking off his back but it's not causing McIntosh any problems.

McIntosh wants to control from the top but Mathis keeps moving.

Mathis has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but McIntosh can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Mathis tries to land a sweep but no joy.
McIntosh trying to move into half guard but instead Mathis has managed to sweep!
Mathis trying to control but McIntosh is working from the bottom.
Mathis wants to get up but he can't break McIntosh's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
McIntosh manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mathis manages to get himself to full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McIntosh landing with the ground and pound.

McIntosh decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

A head kick by Mathis misses

and McIntosh counters with a takedown into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paul McIntosh dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Mathis throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
McIntosh avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Mathis doesn't manage to clinch there - McIntosh circles away.
A left and a right from McIntosh both land. Nice combination.

Mathis has managed to clinch.
Mathis tries for a takedown. No joy.

McIntosh has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Mathis clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
McIntosh gets his hooks in and is throwing strikes.
Mathis turns into McIntosh and is now in his guard.
Mathis trying to control but McIntosh is working from the bottom.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Mathis controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
McIntosh is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and Mathis counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for McIntosh!

Mathis is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, McIntosh has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Poor strikes thrown by Mathis there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
McIntosh is wriggling around trying to escape.

McIntosh is squirming around, avoiding Mathis's attempts to control the action.
Mathis lands a nice shot to the head.
McIntosh tries to lock up and control but Mathis gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

McIntosh is in a horrible position here. Mathis smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Mathis takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Good leg kick by Mathis there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Mathis shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in McIntosh's guard.
McIntosh is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Mathis wants to control from the top but McIntosh keeps moving.
McIntosh throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Mathis slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

McIntosh looking for a guillotine here but Mathis defends easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Mathis stands up and waves to McIntosh to follow him.
Mathis misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
McIntosh has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
McIntosh shoots in but Mathis avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Mathis doesn't succeed with the takedown
and McIntosh counters with a series of strikes. Mathis will be more careful next time no doubt.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
McIntosh keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

McIntosh clinches up against the cage.

A body shot lands from McIntosh.
McIntosh has had enough of the clinch but Mathis keeps him there for the moment.
Mathis tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Jason Mathis seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The crowd cheers as McIntosh lands an impressive looking overhand right. Mathis doesn't seem phased though.

McIntosh throws a left and a right that both miss
and Mathis counters with a low kick, right behind McIntosh 's knee.

Mathis moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

McIntosh wants to control from the top but Mathis keeps moving.

The fighters are battling for position here. Mathis manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

I would just about give that final round to Paul McIntosh.
Well McIntosh has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
