JaMarcus Russell had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Russell wants to clinch but Patch slips to the side
and Patch counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Patch misses with a series of wild punches.
Patch throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Patch misses with the combination.
No luck for Russell with that takedown attempt.
Russell misses with a takedown attempt - Patch sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Russell takes a jab right on the kisser.
Russell looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Patch stuffs the takedown attempt from Russell. Russell gets slowly back to his feet.

Patch throws the left hand but Russell avoids the punch easily.
Patch connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Russell's hands.

and Patch counters with a left and a right that stings Russell.
Russell tries to score a power double leg takedown but Patch sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Russell somewhat.

Patch shoots in looking for a takedown. Russell tries to sprawl out of it but Patch keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Russell manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Russell bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Russell is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Patch knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Russell in side control, throwing shots but Patch defends.
Patch takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Russell throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Patch regains half guard.
Patch trying to control from the bottom.
Patch is trying to get back to full guard.
Russell uses his free foot to push down on Patch's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Patch.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee warns Patch that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Russell avoids the attempt from Patch to control.

Russell is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Patch has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Patch!

Patch stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Russell swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Patch is looking to work some ground and pound but Russell has wrist control.

Patch is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Russell wants to get back to his feet but Patch is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Patch pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Russell is keeping the position for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Cabbage Patch will probably get the nod.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Patch fails with a takedown attempt.
Patch takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
No luck for Patch with that takedown attempt.
Patch goes for a double leg but Russell avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Russell continues to drive forward.
JaMarcus Russell has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cabbage Patch.
Patch drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Russell pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Patch swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Russell connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Patch lunges at Russell with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Russell's hand.
JaMarcus Russell is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Patch misses with a looping right.

and Russell counters with a leg kick.
Patch is breathing heavily.
Patch throws a left and a right that both miss
and Russell counters with a powerful cross that connects right on the chin and the lights go out! A massive one punch knock out!
