PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Night Owl (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack The Ripper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Owl comes into the arena with Dead man Gun blaring out of the sound system. Jack The Ripper told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Night Owl!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jack The Ripper!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Summer Carpenter and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Owl fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

and The Ripper counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
A slow jab from The Ripper misses its intended target.

and Owl counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
The Ripper tries for a takedown. No joy.

Owl pulls guard successfully.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
The Ripper stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Owl swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The Ripper drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and The Ripper jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The Ripper is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Jack The Ripper has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
The Ripper dodges the punch combination from Owl.
The Ripper throws a jab when Owl was well out of range.
The Ripper misses with an uppercut.
Night Owl seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Owl is defended easily by The Ripper.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Night Owl. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Owl shoots in and drives through. The Ripper sprawls well.
Nice takedown defense from Owl. No joy for The Ripper on that attempt.
Owl misses with a hook. The Ripper ducked under it nicely.

The Ripper gets caught napping as Owl dives in and scores a takedown. The Ripper manages to retain guard.

Owl is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Owl knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for The Ripper on the ground.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Owl accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The Ripper looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The Ripper wants to sweep but no luck.
Owl stays in close to The Ripper's body and controls the position.
The Ripper lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Owl!

Owl tries to hold on but The Ripper postures up.
Owl is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
The Ripper throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
The Ripper tries to control but Owl wriggling away.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Owl keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Owl rushes The Ripper and presses him up against the cage.
The Ripper is working for takedown but Owl is calmly controlling the position for now.

Owl breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Owl dives in and scores a takedown into The Ripper's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The Ripper has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Owl can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Owl wants to control from the top but The Ripper keeps moving.

The Ripper looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The Ripper is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Owl postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
The Ripper is adopting a defensive guard.
Owl wants to stand but The Ripper has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Owl gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Night Owl is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Owl is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. The Ripper can't fight it off and eventually Owl manages to take the fight to the floor. The Ripper looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

The Ripper is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Owl is aware though and is defending well.
The Ripper is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Owl got a little sloppy there for a moment and The Ripper has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Owl has managed to get both his arms back between The Ripper's legs - danger averted.

Owl is looking to work some ground and pound but The Ripper has wrist control.

Owl not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Owl closes this distance looking for a takedown but The Ripper circles away.

Night Owl dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

The Ripper jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Owl swings away with a leg kick that misses.
The Ripper leaves Owl with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
The fighters circling - The Ripper throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
The Ripper throws out a loose jab but Owl uses good head movement to avoid it.
The Ripper throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
The Ripper slips a jab from Owl.
Owl fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
The Ripper pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Owl back to the cage. The Ripper follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

The Ripper bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Owl is not content to let The Ripper control the position.
Owl takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Owl is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on The Ripper's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

The Ripper is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The Ripper is just content to waste time from the top position. Owl takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Owl controls The Ripper momentarily but The Ripper frees himself.
Owl is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Jack The Ripper comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think The Ripper has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
