PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kalei Malu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Wong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wong has chosen Gangnam Style as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Yuuki Gou and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wong scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Wong controls the position.

Malu gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Malu really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Well, if Wong is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Wong is trying to work for a kimura but Malu is defending well.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Malu keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Wong will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. David Wong wasn't active enough on the ground.

Wong forces Malu back against the cage and clinches.
Wong tries to pull guard but Malu holds him up against the cage and eventually Wong drops back down to his feet.
Malu wants to take the fight to the mat but Wong manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Wong's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Malu gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Wong to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Malu looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Wong looking to sit in guard and control but Malu gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Wong tries to land a sweep but no joy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Kalei Malu will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Wong fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Malu avoids it really well and circles away.

Wong gets a clinch.

Wong pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Wong fails to land the takedown.

Wong rushes Malu and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Wong lands a nice looking kick to the body. Malu takes a step back to recover.

Malu has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Wong avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Malu drops down looking for an ankle pick but Wong pulls his leg out and moves away.

Malu is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Wong gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kalei Malu. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Come on Wong - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Wong is working for takedown but Malu is calmly controlling the position for now.

Wong takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Wong looks for a takedown but Malu sprawls well.

Wong fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Malu, pushing him back against the cage.

Malu has Wong pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Wong manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

David Wong comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Wong has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
