PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mike Bell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Fred Gilbert (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mike Bell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Fred Gilbert!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Alec Ball and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gilbert tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Bell manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Gilbert shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Bell pinned against the cage. Bell gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Bell gets a clinch.
Bell goes for a takedown in the clinch but Gilbert prevents it.
Gilbert gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Bell.

Bell manages to break the clinch.
Gilbert circles away from the clinch attempt

and Gilbert holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Bell has hold of one of Gilbert's legs. Gilbert is fighting the takedown attempt but Bell gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Gilbert has his foot on Bell's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Bell works his way back into a safe position though.

Gilbert is looking for a triangle but Bell pushes his legs off easily.
Gilbert is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Bell has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Gilbert looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Bell has picked Gilbert up and slammed him! Gilbert can't keep hold of the triangle and Bell manages to pass to side control!

Bell wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gilbert keeps working.

Bell tries to stand but Gilbert is controlling his head.
You can see the frustration on Gilbert's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Gilbert tries to bench press Bell off him but Bell keeps the position.
Gilbert wants to control but Bell postures up.

Bell decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Gilbert tries to land a body kick
and Bell counters with an inside leg kick.
Gilbert looks winded!
The fight stays on the outside here - Bell looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Bell moves into the clinch.

Bell breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Gilbert throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Bell's waist but Bell gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gilbert off to one side.

Bell closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Gilbert did well to prevent Bell getting side control.
Bell seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Gilbert does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Gilbert slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Bell looking to sit in guard and control but Gilbert gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Bell has Gilbert pulled in close to control his posture.
Bell might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Gilbert working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Bell wants to sweep here but Gilbert controlling him for the moment.

Bell working for submissions but it's allowed Gilbert to get to half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Gilbert wants to pass the guard but Bell is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Bell pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Gilbert back to the cage. Bell follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Gilbert is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Bell is keeping busy.
Bell stalling in the clinch but Gilbert improves position.

Gilbert is trying to pull guard but Bell turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Gilbert drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Bell tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Gilbert smiles and moves away.

Bell throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Gilbert was covering up waiting for the punch and Bell finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Bell trying to control the position from guard on top but Gilbert is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Bell wants to pass the guard but Gilbert is keeping the position.
Bell distracts Gilbert with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Bell wants to control from the top but Gilbert keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Bell has gone for a leg lock! Gilbert slips out almost immediately though and dives into Bell's guard.
Gilbert throws a big elbow that misses.

Bell is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Bell tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Bell is thwarting Gilbert's attempts to control the position.
Bell tries to stand and escape but Gilbert is controlling the position.
Bell works his way into full mount!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Bell tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gilbert misses with a head kick.
Bell avoids the head kick by Gilbert.
Bell avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Bell closes the distance and clinches up with Gilbert, looking for a takedown. Bell pushes Gilbert against the cage but Gilbert circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Bell shoots in and drives through. Gilbert sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mike Bell. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Gilbert throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Bell's waist but Bell gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gilbert off to one side.

Bell is looking to clinch.
Gilbert doesn't manage to clinch there - Bell circles away.
Gilbert swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Gilbert stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gilbert wants it to stay on the feet.
Gilbert shoots in for a takedown but Bell shows good takedown defense.
Gilbert takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Bell throws a head kick but Gilbert moves out of range.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Bell is defended easily by Gilbert.
Gilbert leaves Bell with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Bell looks to land a body kick but Gilbert moved away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bell closes the distance and clinches up with Gilbert, looking for a takedown. Bell pushes Gilbert against the cage but Gilbert circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Gilbert moves out of range as Bell throws a body kick.

Gilbert fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Bell, pushing him back against the cage.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Gilbert.
Gilbert has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Gilbert jumps guard but Bell stands there with Gilbert around his waist. Gilbert gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Bell jumps into guard, dragging Gilbert to the mat.
Bell is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Bell is trying to hold Gilbert in close to prevent damage but Gilbert has managed to pass into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gilbert seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Bell is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Gilbert lands strikes from half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gilbert frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Gilbert controlling the position easily from mount.
Gilbert misses with a head shot.
Bell is in a horrible position here. Gilbert smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Bell tries to control Gilbert's body but Gilbert pushes him off. Bell squirms to his side and now Gilbert has his back!

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Fred Gilbert.
Well Bell has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
