PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between VJ Kiwi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Evil Ryu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kiwi comes to the ring accompanied by Redlight - Get Out My Head. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, VJ Kiwi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Evil Ryu!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Josh West and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kiwi fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Ryu wants to clinch but Kiwi slips to the side

and Kiwi counters with a shoot takedown. Ryu fights it but they end up in guard.
Kiwi passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Ryu is not content to let Kiwi control the position.
Kiwi works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Kiwi wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Ryu, who protects the arm well.
Ryu is looking for a sweep.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kiwi fails to land a wild elbow strike.

Kiwi swings around for an armbar but Ryu sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Kiwi's guard.
Kiwi pulls Ryu in to control the position.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Ryu wanted to stand there but Kiwi had control of the position.

We're going to have a standup here because VJ Kiwi wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Ryu wants to clinch but Kiwi slips to the side

and Kiwi decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Ryu's guard.


Ryu is rocked!

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Ryu holds on and takes a little breather.
Kiwi controls from within his opponent's guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Kiwi working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Kiwi tries to score with some ground and pound. Ryu controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

Kiwi swings around for an armbar but Ryu sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Kiwi's guard.

Kiwi manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ryu manages to get himself to full guard.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Kiwi in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Ryu is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Kiwi is controlling him.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Kiwi trying to control but Ryu is working from the bottom.

The ref stands the fighters back up because VJ Kiwi just wasn't active enough.
Kiwi throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Ryu's waist but Ryu gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kiwi off to one side.
Kiwi swats away the attempt to clinch by Ryu.
Ryu tries to close the distance and clinch but Kiwi swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

and Kiwi counters with a shoot takedown. Ryu fights it but they end up in guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Kiwi wants to control from the top but Ryu keeps moving.

Kiwi looking to sit in guard and control but Ryu gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Ryu would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Kiwi tries to land a sweep but no joy.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up because VJ Kiwi just wasn't active enough.
Kiwi keeps the fight on the outside.
Ryu tries to close the distance and clinch but Kiwi swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Evil Ryu is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Kiwi closes this distance looking for a takedown but Ryu circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for VJ Kiwi. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Ryu clinches up with Kiwi and pushes him back against the ropes.
Ryu landing some nice looking knees to the body.
Ryu is trying to wear down his opponent with knees to the body.

Ryu gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Kiwi.

Kiwi has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Ryu is trying to keep an underhook but Kiwi manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Kiwi is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Kiwi stops Ryu from getting back to his feet.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

VJ Kiwi dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Kiwi looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Kiwi looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Kiwi is just content to waste time from the top position. Ryu takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Kiwi is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
VJ Kiwi overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Kiwi prevents Ryu from getting back to his feet.
Ryu keeping moving, preventing Kiwi from controlling successfully.
Kiwi works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Kiwi looking for a submission but Ryu manages to get full guard, putting an end to that submission attempt.

Kiwi wants to control from the top but Ryu keeps moving.
Ryu pulls Kiwi in to control the position.

Ryu wants to get back to his feet but Kiwi is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of VJ Kiwi.
Kiwi misses with a takedown attempt - Ryu sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Ryu tries to clinch up against the ropes, rushing in the close the distance. Kiwi manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Kiwi is pushing down on Ryu's leg trying to pass to half guard. Ryu is fighting to maintain full guard but Kiwi has managed to sneak the leg through.

Ryu really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kiwi. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Kiwi seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Kiwi is looking for a kimura but Ryu is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Kiwi to get the leverage.
Kiwi wants to take a breather but Ryu is having none of it.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Kiwi is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Ryu!

Ryu wants to escape the position.

Kiwi is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Ryu knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Ryu for a finish.

Ryu is the more experienced fighter here and he's going to need to draw on some of that experience if he's going to pull this one out the bag.

Ryu is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Kiwi gets his way!

Ryu is having to fend off submission attempts from Kiwi, who is looking to sink in the choke. Kiwi doesn't have the hooks in though and Ryu manages to reverse position! He's now on top, in his opponent's guard.

Kiwi looking to hit a scissor sweep but Ryu is one step ahead there.
Kiwi wants to control the position but Ryu says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

Kiwi is looking for a sweep. Ryu is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Kiwi is staying active underneath Ryu, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

VJ Kiwi has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Kiwi closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Evil Ryu has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

VJ Kiwi showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Kiwi has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
