The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carrol throws a head kick but Messi moves out of range.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

It looks like Andy Carrol has been cut.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Messi drops back, looking for a kneebar! Carrol looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Carrol looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Carrol!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Carrol is fighting to break Messi's control of his arms but Messi is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Messi manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Messi lands a big shot there that rocks Carrol but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Messi goes for an armbar but Carrol turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Carrol.
Messi has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Messi manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Carrol manages to get himself to full guard.

Messi is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Carrol knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Messi on the ground.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Messi drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Carrol dives on top into guard.
Messi is pulling down on Carrol's head. It's preventing any offense from Carrol, at least for the moment.
