PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Riley Wangstaff (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bruce Lee (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Riley Wangstaff!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Bruce Lee!
The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Taro Takaoka and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lee looks to land a combination but Wangstaff avoids it well.
Lee tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Wangstaff paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Wangstaff shoots for a takedown but Lee saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Wangstaff shoots for a double leg takedown but Lee sprawls well. He's pushed Wangstaff's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Wangstaff tries to clinch but Lee moves away

and Lee counters with a takedown into side control.

Lee misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Wangstaff parries the strikes from Lee easily there. Lee is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Wangstaff to escape.

Wangstaff is trying to get back to his feet.

Lee gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Wangstaff has his takedown stuffed
and Lee counters with a head kick. That will keep Wangstaff thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Lee looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Lee lands strikes from half guard.

Lee wants to get back to his feet.
Wangstaff keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Wangstaff pushes Lee off and gets back to his feet.
Wangstaff takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Lee circles away from the clinch attempt
and Lee counters with a three punch combo that has Wangstaff backing up. Wangstaff nods at Lee to acknowledge the strikes.

Wangstaff tries to clinch up.
Wangstaff looks for a takedown but Lee sprawls well.
Wangstaff misses with a takedown

and Lee counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Wangstaff's guard now.
Lee should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Lee throws a strike but Wangstaff rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Lee has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Wangstaff has passed into side control.

Wangstaff decides to stand back up.
Riley Wangstaff seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Lee throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Wangstaff moves in looking to clinch but Lee pushes him off.
Wangstaff shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Lee tries to clinch but Wangstaff moves away

and Wangstaff counters by moving into the clinch.

Lee breaks the clinch.
Wangstaff tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Lee counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Wangstaff is not content to let Lee control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bruce Lee dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Lee shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Lee showed some decent athleticism there.
Lee tries to stand but can't do so whilst Wangstaff controls his leg.

Lee stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Wangstaff fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Lee throws a sloppy head kick

and Wangstaff counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Lee lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Wangstaff is not content to let Lee control the position.

Lee escapes and gets back to his feet.

Wangstaff fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Lee, pushing him back against the cage.
Wangstaff comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
Wangstaff connects with a nasty looking knee right to Lee's face.
Wangstaff lands a nice elbow from the clinch.
Wangstaff misses with a knee to the head.
Wangstaff scores with a knee to the head.
Wangstaff misses with an elbow over the top.
Wangstaff lands an elbow inside.
Wangstaff with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Wangstaff lands a damaging elbow.
Lee blocks the elbow strike.
Wangstaff takes a knee right on the jaw!
Lee is trying to break the clinch but Wangstaff has him pressed against the cage.
Wangstaff using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Lee has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Wangstaff keeps control of Lee as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Lee takes an elbow to the forehead.
Wangstaff misses with a knee to the head.
Lee wants a takedown but no success here.
Wangstaff lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.
with the fighters clinched against the cage, Lee creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Lee looks for a takedown but Wangstaff sprawls well.
Lee tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Wangstaff counters with a shoot takedown. Lee fights it but they end up in guard.

Lee pushes Wangstaff off and gets back to his feet.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Wangstaff doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Lee counters with a head kick that drops Wangstaff - he's looking to finish, following his stunned foe to the ground!


Wangstaff is rocked!
Lee slips a nice elbow through Wangstaff's hands, connecting with Wangstaff's forehead.
Oh Wangstaff is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Wangstaff has hold of Lee's hands but Lee slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Wangstaff seems to have got his legs back now.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lee seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Lee is looking to stall here but Wangstaff recovers full guard.

Lee wants to stand and escape but instead Wangstaff has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Wangstaff gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Lee closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Lee throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Lee tries to get to his feet but Wangstaff is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with Lee in his guard.

Wangstaff manages to escape and get back to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Wangstaff closes the distance looking to clinch
and Lee counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bruce Lee showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

and Lee counters with a flying knee that drops Wangstaff! Lee dives in and finishes the fight with a flurry of strikes from the mount!
