PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mike Hunt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jim Griffen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Mike Hunt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jim Griffen!
The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Paulsen Ambrosius and Radbod Blank.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Griffen.
Griffen tries to clinch there but Hunt circles away.
Hunt doesn't manage to clinch there - Griffen circles away.
Hunt keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Griffen defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Hunt.
No joy there for Griffen, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Griffen fails with the takedown.
Mike Hunt has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jim Griffen.

Hunt throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Griffen was covering up waiting for the punch and Hunt finishes the takedown easily into guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Hunt postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Griffen throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Hunt working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Griffen is looking for a triangle but Hunt pushes his legs off easily.

Hunt thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Griffen's head.
Hunt seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Griffen does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Hunt escapes and gets back to his feet.
Griffen comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Hunt fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Hunt attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.

Griffen shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Hunt napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Hunt can't do much from the bottom here.
Hunt manages to work his way to half guard, despite Griffen's best efforts.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Griffen seems to be working for a kimura but Hunt defends the submission attempt.

Griffen pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hunt is keeping the position for now.

Hunt is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Hunt lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Hunt not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Hunt is trying to control the action in half guard but Griffen is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Hunt wants to stand but Griffen has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hunt stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Griffen to get to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Hunt throws a low kick, looking for Griffen's leg but Griffen calmly moves out of range.

Hunt pushes Griffen up against the cage in a clinch.
Hunt has had enough of the clinch but Griffen keeps him there for the moment.
Hunt tries to break free but Griffen pushes him back against the cage.
A frustrated look appears on Hunt's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Hunt manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

and Griffen counters with a shoot takedown. Hunt fights it but they end up in guard.

Griffen is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Griffen has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Hunt is proving hard to escape from.
Griffen postures up.
Griffen should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Hunt wants to stand and escape but Griffen is having none of it.

We're going to have a standup here because Mike Hunt wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Griffen is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Hunt off and has taken his back!

Griffen seems to be going for a rear naked choke. He has an arm under Hunt's chin but Hunt turns very nicely into Griffen's guard. Good BJJ skills being displayed there by Hunt.
Griffen is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Hunt tries to free his leg and advance position but Griffen is retaining full guard.
Hunt wants to get up but he can't break Griffen's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Griffen working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Hunt has passed into half guard!
Hunt is looking to stall here but Griffen recovers full guard.

Hunt trying to control the position from guard on top but Griffen is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Griffen throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Griffen is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Mike Hunt will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Hunt shoots in for a double leg but Griffen sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Griffen keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Hunt's efforts to push away.
Hunt wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Griffen has him pressed against the cage.

Hunt's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Some bone on bone action there as Griffen checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Griffen keeps the fight on the outside.

Griffen closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Hunt is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Griffen is controlling him well.

Griffen decides to stand up, so the ref orders Hunt to his feet.

Griffen wants to clinch up but Hunt keeps it at a distance.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Hunt moves to clinch but Griffen breaks away
and Griffen counters with a two punch combo.

Griffen closes the distance and pushes Hunt back into the cage.
Hunt is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Griffen to keep the fight standing.
Griffen drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.

Hunt pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Hunt throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Griffen counters with a series of strikes. Hunt will be more careful next time no doubt.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Hunt throws a series of punches but Griffen moves out of range.
Hunt stuffs the takedown.
Mike Hunt has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jim Griffen.
Griffen slips a jab and a cross from Hunt.

Hunt gets caught napping as Griffen dives in and scores a takedown. Hunt manages to retain guard.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Griffen's corner is telling him to maintain position.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Jim Griffen wasn't active enough on the ground.

and Hunt counters with a left and a right that stings Griffen.
Hunt lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Griffen changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Hunt tries to avoid it but Griffen manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Hunt to the ground. Hunt escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Hunt closes the distance and clinches.
Griffen jumps guard but Hunt turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Griffen tries to pull guard but Hunt won't allow it.

Hunt has Griffen pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Hunt pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Griffen tumbling to the mat - Hunt dives into Griffen's guard.
Griffen bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Hunt's guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hunt keeping moving, preventing Griffen from controlling successfully.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Jim Griffen comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Hunt has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
