PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jack Matt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Khan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Khan has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. John Khan has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jack Matt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, John Khan!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Gregory Folan and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Matt changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Khan tries to avoid it but Matt manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Khan to the ground. Khan escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Matt feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Matt trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Khan looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Khan manages to escape and get back to his feet.

Khan clinches with his opponent.

Matt tries to pull guard but Khan holds him up against the cage and eventually Matt drops back down to his feet.

Khan drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Matt gets the underhooks and prevents it.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Khan.
Matt tries to land knees in the clinch but Khan avoids the damage to the body.

Matt has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Khan regains guard immediately.
Khan utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Matt with a flurry of punches that miss.
Matt wants to control from the top but Khan keeps moving.
Matt wants to pass the guard but Khan is keeping the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Matt chips away with some ground and pound.
Matt throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Khan works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Matt might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Matt in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Matt tries to free his leg and advance position but Khan is retaining full guard.

Matt thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Khan is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Matt defends well.
Khan is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Matt wants to control but Khan is keeping busy.
Matt wants to improve his position but Khan is controlling well.
Matt gets back to full guard.
Matt striking off his back but it's not causing Khan any problems.

Matt looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Khan prevents Matt from getting back to his feet.
Matt is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Khan accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Khan gets to his feet. Matt looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Matt shoots in for a takedown but Khan shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jack Matt. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Khan misses with a body kick.
Matt fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Khan manages to avoid it.

Khan closes the distance and pushes Matt back into the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Matt dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


No luck with that takedown attempt from Matt.
Matt doesn't manage to clinch there - Khan circles away.
Matt fails with the takedown.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Matt is defended easily by Khan.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jack Matt. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Matt throws a low kick but Khan avoids it.
Matt tries to close the distance and clinch up but Khan swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Matt misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

and Khan counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Khan slips a nice elbow through Matt's hands, connecting with Matt's forehead.
Matt is looking for a sweep. Khan is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Khan lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Well, if Khan is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Matt trying to get back to full guard but Khan takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount!
Khan avoids the attempt from Matt to control.

Matt tries to hold on but Khan pushes him away.

Khan with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Matt is just holding on here. Khan manages to take his back.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Matt tries to break free.

Khan trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Matt doesn't escape.
Khan keeps control of the position as Matt tries to break free.
I would not like to be Matt right now.
I really don't envy Matt right now.
Khan biding his time, looking for the opening.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Khan has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.
Matt holding on to Khan's left wrist, preventing the choke.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Khan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Khan advances to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Matt wants to control but Khan is keeping busy.
Matt pushes Khan off looking to stand but Khan dives back in and keeps control.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Khan lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Matt wants to improve his position but Khan is controlling well.
Matt looks like he's trying to stand up.

Matt knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Khan on the ground.

Khan content to control rather than advance.
Matt makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Matt.

Matt is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Khan stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Matt swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Khan stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Khan wants it to stay on the feet.

Khan shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Matt is trying to defend but Khan finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Khan seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Khan is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Matt knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

John Khan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Khan has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
