PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Cena (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cena kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is My Time Is Now. John Thomas will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Thomas!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Steve Montenegro and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thomas throws a leg kick but Cena moved away.

Cena shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Thomas gets back to full guard.
Cena missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Thomas utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Thomas throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Cena trying to control but Thomas is working from the bottom.
Cena postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Thomas working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Cena doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Cena manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Cena is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Thomas won't allow Cena to get back to his feet.
Cena is pulling down on Thomas's head. It's preventing any offense from Thomas, at least for the moment.

Cena leaves Thomas with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Cena got a little sloppy there for a moment and Thomas has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Cena has managed to get both his arms back between Thomas's legs - danger averted.
Cena lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Thomas lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Cena!

Cena on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Cena tries to get out of the position.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Cena is desperately trying to improve his position but Thomas has a good base and remains in mount.

Cena tries to hold on but Thomas postures up.
Cena is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

John Cena dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Thomas gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Cena trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Thomas should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Cena is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Cena here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Poor strikes thrown by Thomas there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Thomas has control of Cena's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Cena regains control of the situation pretty easily.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

John Thomas showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Cena shoots in and drives through. Thomas sprawls well.
Thomas jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.

Cena is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Thomas is defending well.
Thomas can't break the clinch.
Thomas creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.

Cena works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

Cena's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

John Cena has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Thomas lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Thomas shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Cena as he avoids it easily.
Cena keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Thomas takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Cena scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Cena throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Thomas works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.

Cena postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cena tries to free his leg and advance position but Thomas is retaining full guard.
Thomas wants to get back to his feet but Cena is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to John Cena.
I think Cena has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

After the fight, John Cena was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
