PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Van Leeder (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brynden Rivers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Leeder might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Pantera - Cowboys From Hell. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Van Leeder!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Brynden Rivers!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Daniel Franklin and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rivers fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Leeder, pushing him back against the cage.
Rivers lands a knee to the body.

Leeder is fighting off a takedown attempt but Rivers is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Leeder to the mat. Leeder regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Rivers tries to stand but Leeder is controlling from the bottom.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rivers is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Rivers wants to stand but Leeder is controlling his posture from full guard.
Leeder will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Rivers tries to free his leg and advance position but Leeder is retaining full guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
The fight stays on the outside here - Leeder looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Leeder tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Rivers paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Rivers has Leeder pressed against the cage, preventing Leeder from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Leeder tries to break the clinch but Rivers is controlling the position.

Leeder has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Rivers pulls guard successfully.
Rivers wants to control but Leeder passes easily into half guard.
Rivers is trying to control but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Leeder seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Rivers is trying is best to control the position here.

Leeder is looking to take a break and control but Rivers is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Leeder stuffs the takedown attempt from Rivers. Rivers gets slowly back to his feet.
Rivers tries to clinch but Leeder moves out of range.

Rivers closes the distance and clinches.

Rivers breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Rivers moves into range and clinches up with Leeder.
Rivers lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Rivers lands a nice elbow.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Rivers.
Leeder is trying to break the clinch but Rivers is controlling him.
A body shot lands from Rivers.
Leeder tries to circle away but Rivers has him pinned against the cage.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Rivers takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Rivers lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Leeder is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Rivers receives a warning from the referee for stalling.

Rivers gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Rivers must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Rivers would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rivers is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Leeder pulls Rivers in to control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brynden Rivers dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Leeder throws a right and a left that both miss.
Rivers tries to close the distance and clinch up but Leeder swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Leeder wants to clinch up but Rivers keeps it at a distance.
Leeder connects with a good right hand that stumbles Rivers. Rivers circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Leeder fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Rivers cracks Leeder with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Leeder throws a combination. Rivers tries to block but a couple of punches get through.


It looks like Brynden Rivers has been cut.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Leeder tries to bum rush Rivers with a series of wild strikes but Rivers uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Rivers misses with a straight left.
Rivers tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Rivers fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Leeder, pushing him back against the cage.
Rivers displaying some good clinch control by pressing Leeder up against the cage.
Leeder wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Rivers lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Leeder is looking to improve his position.
Leeder trying to control but Rivers postures up.
The fighters are battling for position here. Leeder manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Leeder lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Rivers!
Rivers avoids a series of strikes thrown by Leeder.

Rivers is trying desperately to improve position.
Rivers tries to hold on but Leeder pushes him away.
Leeder throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Leeder can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Rivers is looking to escape.

Rivers wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.

Rivers fending off the submission attempt from Leeder.
Rivers really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Leeder. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Rivers looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
You can see the frustration on Rivers's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Van Leeder tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
