PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Corey Norman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Valentine (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mike Valentine struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 137.1lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Mike Valentine looks lathargic as he enters the arena. Wake up son, you're about to have a fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Corey Norman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mike Valentine!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Hugh Johnson and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Norman shoots in looking for a takedown. Valentine tries to sprawl out of it but Norman keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Valentine manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Valentine throws a wild body kick that Norman sees coming a mile off.

Norman fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Valentine to the ground. Norman is now in Valentine's guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Norman is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Norman advances position into side control!
Norman trying to control the position but Valentine is working away.

Norman decides to stand back up. Norman steps back and let's Valentine get back to his feet.
Norman wants to clinch up but Valentine keeps it at a distance.

Norman closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Valentine looks gassed!

Valentine is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Norman is controlling him well.
Valentine dodges the ground and pound from Norman.
Norman has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Norman is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Valentine knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Norman really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Norman stands up and beckons Valentine to his feet.
The fight stays on the outside here - Norman looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Norman shoots in but Valentine avoids the takedown attempt easily.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Corey Norman. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Valentine trying to stall but Norman improves his position.
Norman's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

and Valentine counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Valentine.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Valentine postures up in Norman's guard and throws a big left but Norman blocks it.

Norman is looking for a sweep. Valentine is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Norman is looking to control Valentine's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Norman avoid being mounted?
Valentine wants to stand but Norman has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Valentine blocks the strikes from Norman.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Valentine is stalling here. Norman is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Valentine seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Norman has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Norman thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Norman wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Valentine, who protects the arm well.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Norman is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Valentine knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Valentine fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Norman sprawls well initially but Valentine persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Norman keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Valentine throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Norman is looking to control Valentine's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Norman avoid being mounted?

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Norman is staying active underneath Valentine, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Norman is trying to stand up here but Valentine is controlling him well.
Norman is not content to let Valentine control the position.
Valentine working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Norman is working on a guillotine. He's managed to get to full guard and he's really squeezing tight! Valentine is tapping! Great win for Norman!

A relieved looking Corey Norman thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
