PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Frank Walsh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Karhan Kaan Kayan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Walsh is coming into this fight with a significant injury, which will no doubt have an effect on his cardio. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Frank Walsh!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Karhan Kaan Kayan!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Colin Fray and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice takedown defense from Walsh. No joy for Kayan on that attempt.
Walsh is breathing heavily.
Kayan shoots in for a takedown but Walsh shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Kayan shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Walsh pinned against the cage. Walsh gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Frank Walsh has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Karhan Kaan Kayan.
Kayan dives in and grabs Walsh's left leg, looking for a takedown. Walsh pushes down on Kayan's head and hops out.
Kayan shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Walsh but Walsh pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Kayan shoots in looking for a takedown. Walsh tries to sprawl out of it but Kayan keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Walsh manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Walsh is in trouble now - Kayan has advanced to mount!
Kayan content just to control the position here.
Kayan pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kayan throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
The referee warns Walsh that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Kayan throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Walsh because Kayan loaded up on that one.
Kayan trying to control but Walsh is having none of it.
Kayan is landing with some decent strikes but Walsh is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Kayan has control of Walsh's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Walsh regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Poor strikes thrown by Kayan there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Walsh on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Walsh tries to get out of the position.

Kayan looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Walsh holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Kayan tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Kayan takes Walsh's back. Could be looking for a rear naked choke here - either way, Walsh is in trouble.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Kayan shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Walsh sprawls well. Walsh wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Kayan gets slowly back to his feet.
Kayan looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

and Walsh counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kayan looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Walsh is fending him off so far but Kayan persists. Nope, Walsh circles away and we're back to standing.

Kayan sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Kayan shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Walsh sprawls well. Walsh wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Kayan gets slowly back to his feet.
Walsh lunges at Kayan with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Kayan's hand.
Kayan fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Kayan shoots in for a double leg but Walsh sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Kayan throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Walsh's waist but Walsh gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kayan off to one side.

A decent looking body kick lands there for Walsh.
Kayan has a takedown stuffed.
Kayan shoots in but Walsh avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Kayan fails to land the takedown.
Kayan fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Walsh manages to avoid it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Frank Walsh will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Kayan changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Walsh looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Kayan is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Walsh knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Kayan wants to control but Walsh is keeping him busy.
Kayan in side control, throwing shots but Walsh defends.
Walsh is not content to let Kayan control the position.
Kayan has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Kayan is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Walsh knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kayan on the ground.

Kayan has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Kayan fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Walsh stuffs the takedown.
Walsh lunges at Kayan with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Kayan's hand.
Kayan fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Kayan misses with a takedown
and Walsh counters with a nice low kick that buckles Kayan's knee momentarily.
Kayan keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Kayan drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Kayan pushes down on Walsh's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Walsh avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Kayan.

Kayan is working for a submission of some sort.

Kayan wants to work for an arm triangle but Walsh is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
Karhan Kaan Kayan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Kayan has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
