PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jackson Briggs (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Renato King (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). King is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Supreme court hymn. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jackson Briggs!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Renato King!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Frank Antenori and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
King throws a good cross that connects.
King is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Briggs lands a left and a right that send King crashing to the mat, dazed. Briggs thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!


King is rocked!


It looks like Renato King has been cut.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
King ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Briggs moves away.
Briggs loads up on a big right hand but King slips the punch.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Briggs, right into the meat.
A head kick misses from Briggs.
King fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Briggs avoids it really well and circles away.
King bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Briggs swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Briggs misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from King.
King avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Briggs keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from King.

Briggs looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.

and Briggs counters with a lovely straight right hand!
A looping hook to the body misses from King. Briggs does a little dance to reset his feet.
Briggs pulls out of a head kick attempt.

King is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Briggs's half guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
King thows a huge punch but Briggs dodges it nicely.
King scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

King is looking for a kimura but Briggs is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for King to get the leverage.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
King throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
King thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Briggs's head.
King has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
King looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Briggs is refusing to be controlled, as King sits in half guard.

King drops an elbow to the side of Briggs's head.
Briggs tries to roll over but King keeps him under control.

King is working for a kimura but Briggs is defending it quite comfortably.
King slips a nice elbow through Briggs's hands, connecting with Briggs's forehead.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
King is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

King is looking for a kimura but Briggs is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for King to get the leverage.

King looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
This has been an exciting period of action!

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
King is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Briggs doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time King.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

King takes a swing at Briggs's ribcage but misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
King throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Briggs misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Nice defenses there by Briggs.
King is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Briggs rather than just go for the knockout.

Jackson Briggs is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Briggs pushing out the jab but it's not landing.

King tries to score a power double leg takedown but Briggs sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten King somewhat.
King loads up on a big right hand but Briggs slips the punch.
King shoots in looking for a takedown. Briggs tries to sprawl out of it but King keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Briggs manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

King misses with a jab to the body
and Briggs counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
King misses with a body shot.
Renato King seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
King dives in and grabs Briggs's left leg, looking for a takedown. Briggs pushes down on King's head and hops out.
Jackson Briggs has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Renato King.
Briggs misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
King jabbing away but nothing is landing.

Briggs ducks down and throws a hook to the body but King moves away.

Briggs tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
A slow jab from Briggs misses its intended target.
King misses the jab.
King shoots in but no luck this time.
King misses with a wild body shot.
Briggs is really struggling to find his range with his punches. King's reach advantage is clearly causing him problems.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from King is defended easily by Briggs.

King closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

King is looking for a kimura but Briggs is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for King to get the leverage.
Briggs wants to improve his position but King is controlling well.

King is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Briggs is just riding it out for now. King eventually gives up the hold.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Renato King showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


King ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Briggs uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from King.
King connects with a good right hand that stumbles Briggs. Briggs circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
King ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Briggs moves away.

King closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Briggs's guard.
Briggs preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
King works over Briggs with some ground and pound from guard.

Briggs is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

King lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
King trying to control but Briggs is working from the bottom.
King sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Briggs's guard.

Briggs is refusing to be controlled, as King sits in half guard.
King lands with a punch from half guard.

Briggs has hold of King's hands but King slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

King content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Briggs is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and King defends well.

Jackson Briggs has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
King lands a couple of decent looking shots.

And that's the end of the fight!
Renato King comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got King winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
