PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Po Ping (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mr Ripley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ping comes to the cage accompanied by Kung Fu Fighting. Ripley has chosen The Talented Mr. Ripley - Tu Vuo' Fa l'Americano as his entrance music. Mr Ripley has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Po Ping's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Po Ping!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mr Ripley!
The judges for this bout are , Don Winkell and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ripley throws a leg kick

so Ping counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Ripley thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Ping trying to control but Ripley is working from the bottom.
Ping throwing strikes but missing.

Ripley is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Ping defends well.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Ripley preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ping is looking to stand up but Ripley won't let him.
Ping knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ripley on the ground.
Ping postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Ping wants to stand but Ripley is controlling his posture from full guard.
Ping wants to control from the top but Ripley keeps moving.

Ping decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Ping fails in his attempt to clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Ripley shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Ripley stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ping swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Ripley trying to control but Ping is working from the bottom.
Ping preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Ping looking for a sweep. Not yet Ping, not yet.
Ping on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Ping tries to get out of the position.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Ripley throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Ping works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Ripley controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Ripley trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Ping keeping moving, preventing Ripley from controlling successfully.
Ripley has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Mr Ripley has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Ping avoids a punch combination nicely.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Some wild striking there from Ripley.
Ripley lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Ripley fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Ping sprawls well initially but Ripley persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Ripley is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ripley is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Ripley is looking for a kimura here.
It looks like Ripley is going to stand back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ripley landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Ping is refusing to be controlled, as Ripley sits in half guard.
Ping is controlling Ripley's trapped leg to prevent Ripley from advancing to side control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ping tries to kick Ripley off but Ripley keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Ripley thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Ping's head.
Ripley looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Ripley passes to side control.

Ripley is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Ping is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Ripley thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mr Ripley dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!


A combination from Ping does no damage.
Ping throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Ripley's waist but Ripley gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ping off to one side.
Ripley connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Ripley shoots in looking for a takedown. Ping tries to sprawl out of it but Ripley keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Ping manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Ping looks for a takedown but Ripley sprawls well.
A punch lands to the side of Ping 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Ripley throws a series of strikes that have Ping backpedaling.


It looks like Po Ping has been cut.
Ripley lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Ripley gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Ripley kicks Ping off and gets to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ripley dives in and grabs Ping's left leg, looking for a takedown. Ping pushes down on Ripley's head and hops out.
Ping rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Ripley moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Ripley closes this distance looking for a takedown but Ping circles away.
Po Ping has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mr Ripley.
Ripley slaps away a takedown attempt from Ping, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Ripley has Ping up against the cage in a clinch.
Ripley gets underhooks to prevent Ping's takedown attempt.

Ripley's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Nice sprawl there from Ripley as Ping shoots in.
Ripley fails with a takedown attempt.
Ripley looks to land a combination but Ping avoids it well.

Ripley blocks a head kick by Ping.
Ping fails with an attempt to clinch.
No joy there for Ripley, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Ping wants to clinch but Ripley slips to the side

so Ripley counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Ripley loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Mr Ripley was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Ripley throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Ping counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Ripley scores with a leg kick.
Ripley connects with a single shot there.
Ripley shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Ping but Ping pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Ping shoots for a double leg takedown but Ripley sprawls well. He's pushed Ping's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Ripley throws a nice outside leg kick.
Ripley scores with a three punch combo!
Ripley scores with a nice right hand.

Ripley shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Ripley is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Ripley wants to control from the top but Ping keeps moving.
Ripley is pushing down on Ping's leg trying to pass to half guard. Ping is fighting to maintain full guard but Ripley has managed to sneak the leg through.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Ripley is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Ping sees it coming and defends easily.
Ping wants to get back to full guard.
Ripley looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Ripley wants to take a breather but Ping is having none of it.

Ripley is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Ping is just riding it out for now. Ripley eventually gives up the hold.

Ripley is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Ping doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Ripley.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Ping actively working from the bottom here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mr Ripley showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Po Ping's cut.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Ripley looks to land a combination. Ping sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Ripley works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Ping swats away the attempt to clinch by Ripley.
Ping tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Ripley manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
A swing and a miss from Ping.
Ripley lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Ripley scores with a punch to the head.
Ping scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Ripley stuffs the takedown.
Ping doesn't manage to clinch there - Ripley circles away.
Some wild striking there from Ripley.
Ping tries to score a power double leg takedown but Ripley sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Ping somewhat.

Ripley misses with a head kick.
Ripley fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Ripley feints and as Ping raises his hands in defense, Ripley changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Ripley postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Ping keeping moving, preventing Ripley from controlling successfully.
Ping wants to get back to his feet but Ripley is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Ripley is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Ping manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ripley manages to get himself to full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Ping postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Ping drops back, looking for a kneebar! Ripley looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Ripley looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Ripley!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Ripley tries to move to mount but Ping blocks the move with his legs.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Ripley is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Ping looks calm but he's in trouble here. Ripley gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Ping is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Ripley lets go of the hold and Ping can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:54 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Mr Ripley!
An out of breath and clearly excited Mr Ripley thanked Das Labor for their help and support (and free stuff they sent him).
