PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Ren Akita (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shingo Yamamoto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Shingo Yamamoto was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ren Akita!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Shingo Yamamoto!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Ren Mimura and Sosuke Kotani.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Akita misses with a takedown attempt - Yamamoto sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Nice takedown defense from Yamamoto. No joy for Akita on that attempt.
Akita closes the distance and clinches up with Yamamoto, looking for a takedown. Akita pushes Yamamoto against the cage but Yamamoto circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ren Akita. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Akita shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Yamamoto but Yamamoto pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Yamamoto throws a head kick but Akita moves out of range.

and Akita counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Yamamoto's guard now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Yamamoto can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Akita controls the pace.
Yamamoto really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Akita. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Akita prevents Yamamoto from getting back to his feet.

Akita not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Yamamoto utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Akita wants to control from the top but Yamamoto keeps moving.
Yamamoto looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Yamamoto wants to stand and escape but Akita is having none of it.

Akita thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Akita drops back, looking for a kneebar! Yamamoto looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Yamamoto looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Yamamoto!
The ground and pound from Yamamoto seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Akita manages to work his way to half guard, despite Yamamoto's best efforts.
Yamamoto is keen to just control but Akita is a slippery customer.
Akita trying to control but Yamamoto postures up.
Yamamoto wants to stand but Akita has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Akita is holding on to half guard well.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Ren Akita just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Yamamoto throws a head kick that misses.
Akita misses with a takedown attempt
and Yamamoto counters with a flying knee. Nice.

and Akita counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Yamamoto!
Yamamoto looks gassed!
Akita wants to take his opponent's back but he's not managed it.
Akita is working hard here to advance position.
Akita controlling from mount.
Akita fails to move to back control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ren Akita dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Yamamoto looks to land a body kick but Akita moved away.

Akita feints and as Yamamoto raises his hands in defense, Akita changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Yamamoto is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Akita is controlling him.
Akita stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Yamamoto swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Yamamoto tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Akita pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Yamamoto is keeping the position for now.
Akita wants to control from the top but Yamamoto keeps moving.

Akita works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Akita moves nicely into side control.
Yamamoto pushes Akita away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Akita gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Yamamoto is breathing heavily.
Akita trying to control the position but Yamamoto is working away.
Akita takes a little break here. Yamamoto wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Akita thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Akita tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Yamamoto is looking for a sweep.
Akita staying calm.
Yamamoto is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

Yamamoto trying to remain calm as Akita controls from the top position.
Akita seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Yamamoto for as long as he can get away with.

Akita is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Yamamoto knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Akita is working to tighten is grip on Yamamoto's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Yamamoto has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Akita is really squeezing tight and eventually Yamamoto passes out! Akita breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Ren Akita!
