PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dean Lancaster (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ken Donaldson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lancaster comes to the cage accompanied by Fort Minor - Remember The Name. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Dean Lancaster!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ken Donaldson!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Taro Takaoka and Tatsuya Matsuyama.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice takedown defense from Donaldson. No joy for Lancaster on that attempt.
Donaldson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Lancaster pinned against the cage. Lancaster gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Donaldson fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
A head kick lands from Lancaster that sends Donaldson to the canvas. Donaldson tries to scramble back to his feet but Lancaster brings him back down into side control.


It looks like Ken Donaldson has been cut.

Lancaster decides to stand back up. Lancaster steps back and let's Donaldson get back to his feet.

Donaldson closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Lancaster to the mat! Lancaster manages to get full guard.
Lancaster wants to sweep here but Donaldson controlling him for the moment.
Donaldson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Donaldson trying to control but Lancaster is working from the bottom.
Lancaster is trying to control the position but Donaldson postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Donaldson trying to control the position from guard on top but Lancaster is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Donaldson stays in close to Lancaster's body and controls the position.
Donaldson pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Lancaster is keeping the position for now.
Lancaster will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Donaldson should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Donaldson looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Donaldson tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Lancaster has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Donaldson is working away from the top position though.

Lancaster won't allow Donaldson to pass to mount.
Donaldson looks gassed!
Lancaster wants to improve his position but Donaldson is controlling well.

Donaldson is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Lancaster trying to control from the bottom.
Donaldson seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Lancaster knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Donaldson on the ground.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Lancaster fails with the takedown

and Donaldson counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Lancaster escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Lancaster throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Lancaster throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Donaldson's waist but Donaldson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Lancaster off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dean Lancaster. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Lancaster shoots in for a takedown but Donaldson shows good takedown defense.
Lancaster clinches but Donaldson breaks the clinch

and Donaldson counters with a nice double leg into side control. Lancaster won't be happy with that.
You can see the frustration on Lancaster's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Lancaster tries to improve position but can't.
Lancaster struggling a bit here.
Lancaster manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Lancaster has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Donaldson is working away from the top position though.
Donaldson looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.

Donaldson shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Donaldson was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Lancaster tries to lock up and control but Donaldson gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lancaster closes the distance and clinches.
Lancaster tries to pull guard but Donaldson won't allow it.
Lancaster lands an elbow inside that Donaldson shrugs off.

Lancaster breaks the clinch.
Lancaster slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

Lancaster moves into the clinch successfully.
Donaldson wants to get back to striking at distance but Lancaster won't allow it.
Lancaster tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Donaldson manages to pull guard.
Lancaster is looking to work some ground and pound but Donaldson has wrist control.
Lancaster looking to sit in guard and control but Donaldson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Lancaster keeping moving, preventing Donaldson from controlling successfully.
Donaldson is breathing heavily.

Donaldson trying to stand up but can't free himself from Lancaster's guard.
Lancaster is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Lancaster looking for a guillotine here but Donaldson defends easily.
Lancaster utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Lancaster closes the distance and clinches up with Donaldson, looking for a takedown. Lancaster pushes Donaldson against the cage but Donaldson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Lancaster changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Donaldson tries to avoid it but Lancaster manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Donaldson to the ground. Donaldson escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Dean Lancaster is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Lancaster tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Donaldson counters with a left and a right that stings Lancaster.
Lancaster shoots and misses
and Donaldson counters with a two punch combo.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Lancaster, as that shot connected.
Nice takedown defense from Lancaster. No joy for Donaldson on that attempt.

Donaldson scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Donaldson trying to control but Lancaster is working from the bottom.
Donaldson is working Lancaster over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Lancaster seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Donaldson won't allow Lancaster to sweep him here.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and Donaldson counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Lancaster's guard now.
Lancaster is trying to keep Donaldson in close.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Lancaster bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Donaldson's guard.
Lancaster passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Donaldson is trying to control Lancaster's posture but Lancaster avoids it.
Ken Donaldson has got the better of the ground game so far.
Donaldson is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Lancaster's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Donaldson gets back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Donaldson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Lancaster manages to get himself to full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Donaldson prevents Lancaster from getting the reversal.
Lancaster is squirming around, avoiding Donaldson's attempts to control the action.
Lancaster slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Lancaster throws a strike but Donaldson rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Dean Lancaster.
I think Donaldson has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
