PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Greg Harris (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ricardo Mendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Greg Harris!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ricardo Mendez!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Reed Andrews and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mendez clinches up with Harris and pushes him back against the cage.
Harris is pushing Mendez up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Mendez landing knees to the head.


It looks like Greg Harris has been cut.

Mendez jumps guard and drags Harris to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Mendez utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Mendez wants to stand but Harris is controlling the position.
Mendez is trying to control the position but Harris postures up.

Mendez wants to sweep but no luck.
Mendez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Harris. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Harris postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Harris stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mendez swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Ricardo Mendez.

and Mendez counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

and Mendez counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Mendez must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Harris has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Mendez can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Harris has his foot on Mendez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Mendez works his way back into a safe position though.
Mendez would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Harris is adopting a defensive guard.

Harris escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mendez gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Harris is breathing heavily.

Mendez drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Mendez jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Mendez decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Mendez moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Mendez has taken the fight to the clinch.
Harris is pushing Mendez up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Mendez wants to stand and escape but Harris is having none of it.

Harris has gone for a leg lock! Mendez slips out almost immediately though and dives into Harris's guard.
Mendez not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Harris is on top in guard.
Mendez looking for a sweep. Not yet Mendez, not yet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mendez avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Mendez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Harris works over Mendez with some ground and pound from guard.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Mendez avoids the head kick by Harris.

Mendez closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Harris is looking for a sweep. Mendez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Mendez tries to stand and escape but Harris is controlling the position.

Mendez is fighting to break Harris's control of his arms but Harris is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Ricardo Mendez hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Harris tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Mendez manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Harris tries to sprawl but Mendez drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Mendez seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Harris does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Harris is looking for a sweep. Mendez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Harris is concentrating on defense, preventing Mendez from advancing position.

Mendez decides to stand up.

Mendez goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Mendez uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Harris.
Greg Harris seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Harris shoots in but Mendez avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Mendez shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Harris napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Harris is not content to let Mendez control the position.

Mendez decides to stand back up. Mendez steps back and let's Harris get back to his feet.
No luck for Harris with that takedown attempt.
Mendez keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Greg Harris. That's going to take a lot out of him.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Harris enables Mendez to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Harris manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Harris is looking for a triangle but Mendez pushes his legs off easily.
Mendez slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Harris has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Mendez should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Harris has tightened it up now! Mendez should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
