PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mort Shula (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dave Rodwell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Rodwell's choice of entrance music: Pitbull - I know you want me. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mort Shula!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dave Rodwell!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Columbo Gatti and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rodwell tries to clinch there but Shula circles away.
Shula closes the distance but Rodwell moves to the side

so Rodwell counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Shula had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Rodwell defends it easily.
Shula trying to keep a closed guard but Rodwell is proving a slippery customer.
Shula knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Rodwell on the ground.
Rodwell wants to control from the top but Shula keeps moving.
Rodwell postures up in Shula's guard and throws a big left but Shula blocks it.
Shula looking to hit a scissor sweep but Rodwell is one step ahead there.
Shula is working hard here to advance position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rodwell is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Rodwell advances to half guard.
Shula is doing well to control the position and prevent Rodwell from advancing to side control.
Rodwell thows a huge punch but Shula dodges it nicely.
Rodwell controlling the pace.
Shula trying to control here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Shula is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Rodwell is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Shula sees it coming and defends easily.
Rodwell wants to pass to mount but Shula is defending the position.
Rodwell is trying to control the action in half guard but Shula is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Rodwell is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Shula doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Rodwell.
Shula trying to hold on to Rodwell's head to control him but Rodwell postures up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Shula is staying active underneath Rodwell, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Rodwell looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Shula tries to get to full guard but Rodwell has control of the leg.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Shula keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Shula tries to roll over but Rodwell keeps him under control.
Rodwell prevents Shula from standing back up.

Rodwell is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Shula is just riding it out for now. Rodwell eventually gives up the hold.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Rodwell wants to take a breather but Shula is having none of it.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dave Rodwell dominated that round.
That's time! Shula's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Shula gets the takedown into side control.

Shula goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Rodwell has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Shula but great work by Rodwell.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shula gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Rodwell frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Rodwell scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Shula tries to hold on but Rodwell pushes him away.

Rodwell quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Rodwell but it's paid off an Shula is forced to tap! Nice work by Rodwell.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:58 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Dave Rodwell!
After winning the bout, Dave Rodwell thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
