PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Anthony Pettis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jowdi Marshall (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pettis comes to the cage accompanied by UFC - Face the Pain. Both fighters really staring eachother down here, as Jowdi Marshall enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Anthony Pettis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Jowdi Marshall!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Eliza Hachem and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Marshall tries to bum rush Pettis with a series of wild strikes but Pettis uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Marshall lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Sloppy strikes from Marshall. Those never looked like landing.
Pettis with a lazy takedown attempt
and Pettis takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Marshall lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Pettis has his takedown stuffed
and Marshall counters with a nice uppercut.
Pettis dives in and grabs Marshall's left leg, looking for a takedown. Marshall pushes down on Pettis's head and hops out.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Anthony Pettis. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A telegraphed right hand from Marshall misses the target.

Pettis manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Marshall on his heels. He'll look to pass Marshall's guard now, I'm sure.
Pettis might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Anthony Pettis has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Jowdi Marshall is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Marshall throws a series of punches but Pettis avoids them all with ease.
Marshall darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Pettis closes this distance looking for a takedown but Marshall circles away.
Marshall is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Pettis postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Marshall is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Pettis, into his guard.

Pettis had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Marshall defends it easily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Pettis is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Marshall content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Pettis preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


A jab from Marshall misses.
Marshall misses the shot to the body.
Marshall throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Pettis sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Jowdi Marshall is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Pettis misses with a takedown
and Marshall counters with a nice body shot.
Marshall throws a looping overhand right but Pettis ducks down to avoid it.
A punch lands to the side of Pettis 's head but he takes it in his stride.

No joy there for Marshall, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Marshall goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

Pettis gets a takedown into half guard.
Marshall manages to get to full guard.
Pettis throwing strikes but missing.
Marshall is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Pettis postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Pettis thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Marshall is trying to keep Pettis in close.
Marshall keeping full guard, as Pettis tries to pass.
Pettis trying to control the position from guard on top but Marshall is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pettis forces his way into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pettis is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Pettis is looking for a kimura here.
Pettis tries to pass to full mount but Marshall defends it.

Pettis is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Marshall doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Pettis.

Pettis thows a huge punch but Marshall dodges it nicely.
Pettis wants to control but Marshall is keeping him busy.

Pettis is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Pettis is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Marshall has managed to free his arm - good work.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Marshall misses with a looping left.
Marshall lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.

Marshall stuffs the takedown attempt from Pettis. Pettis gets slowly back to his feet.
Pettis moves out of range of the strikes.
Jowdi Marshall seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The fighters circling - Marshall throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Marshall throws an overhand right that lands on Pettis's shoulder, as Pettis tries to avoid the shot.
Marshall thows a body shot but no joy.
Marshall jabs Pettis right on the nose. Pettis blinks but takes it well.

Pettis is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Marshall knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Pettis throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Pettis is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Marshall is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

I would just about give that final round to Jowdi Marshall.
I think Pettis has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
