PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Damian Nitschke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Adam Axon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Adam Axon will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Damian Nitschke!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Adam Axon!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Bruno Hogan and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Axon rushes Nitschke and presses him up against the cage.
Axon drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Axon gets control of Nitschke's arms and successfully pulls guard. Axon will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Axon is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Nitschke asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Nitschke takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Axon wants to hold on but Nitschke pushes him away.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Nitschke pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Nitschke takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Damian Nitschke will probably get the nod.

Axon throws a right and a left that Nitschke avoids nicely.
Damian Nitschke seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

It looks like Adam Axon has been cut.

and Nitschke takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Axon rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Nitschke moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Axon misses with a jab, cross combination.
Axon staying out of range there.
Axon uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Nitschke.

Nitschke scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

We're going to have a standup here because Damian Nitschke wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Axon shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Nitschke eats them both and turns towards Axon to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Axon gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Nitschke stuffs the takedown attempt from Axon. Axon gets slowly back to his feet.
Axon shoots and misses
and Nitschke cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Axon throws a right and a left that Nitschke avoids nicely.
Adam Axon is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Nitschke stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Axon.
Nitschke lands with a hook. Axon tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

Nitschke shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Axon as he jumps to the side.

and Axon counters with a series of strikes. Nitschke will be more careful next time no doubt.
Axon shoots in looking for a takedown but Nitschke manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Axon's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Horrible takedown by Axon or perhaps it was just good defense by Nitschke which made him look bad.
Axon swats away the attempt to clinch by Nitschke.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Axon throws a combination. Nitschke tries to block but a couple of punches get through.

Axon shoots in looking for a takedown. Nitschke tries to sprawl out of it but Axon keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Nitschke manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Nitschke throws out a loose jab but Axon uses good head movement to avoid it.

enabling Nitschke to counter with a crisp jab.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Axon lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Axon.

Nitschke ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Axon moves away.
Damian Nitschke is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Nitschke lands with a hook. Axon tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Axon shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Nitschke pinned against the cage. Nitschke gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Nitschke cracks a nice hook into Axon's ribs.

And that's the end of the fight!
Damian Nitschke showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Nitschke, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
