PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Oxygen Vargas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shane Turnham (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Oxygen Vargas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Shane Turnham!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Skip Squint and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vargas misses with a takedown attempt - Turnham sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Nice sprawl there from Turnham as Vargas shoots in.
Vargas shoots in for a takedown but Turnham shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Oxygen Vargas. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Turnham tries to clinch

and Vargas counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Turnham jumps guard but Vargas stands there with Turnham around his waist. Turnham gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Vargas is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Turnham pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Vargas ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Vargas no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Turnham prevents Vargas from getting back to his feet.

Vargas has his foot on Turnham's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Turnham works his way back into a safe position though.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Turnham accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Turnham wants to stand but Vargas has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Turnham gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Turnham shoots in and gets a takedown into Vargas's guard.
Turnham wanted to stand there but Vargas had control of the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vargas keeping full guard, as Turnham tries to pass.

Turnham tries to stand but Vargas is controlling from the bottom.
Turnhamis looking to pass into half guard but Vargas pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Vargas is in guard.

Turnham looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Turnham working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Vargas doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Vargas manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Vargas really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Vargas thows a big elbow that misses.

Turnham has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Vargas can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Vargas gets to his feet - Turnham follows without any prompting.
Turnham takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?

and Vargas counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Turnham's guard now.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Vargas missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Turnham keeping moving, preventing Vargas from controlling successfully.
Vargas tries to free his leg and advance position but Turnham is retaining full guard.
Vargas prevents Turnham from getting back to his feet.
Vargas wants to control from the top but Turnham keeps moving.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Oxygen Vargas.
Turnham tries to close the distance and clinch but Vargas swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Turnham is defended easily by Vargas.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Oxygen Vargas will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Vargas keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Vargas shoots in looking for a takedown. Turnham tries to sprawl out of it but Vargas keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Turnham manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Vargas throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
The fight stays on the outside here - Vargas looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Vargas cracks Turnham with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Vargas shoots in for a takedown but Turnham shows good takedown defense.
Vargas shoots for a double leg takedown but Turnham sprawls well. He's pushed Vargas's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Oxygen Vargas. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Vargas fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Turnham, pushing him back against the cage.

Turnham tries to break free but Vargas pushes him back against the cage.
Turnham fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Turnham is working for takedown but Vargas is calmly controlling the position for now.
Vargas has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Turnham avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Vargas can't get the takedown.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

A frustrated look appears on Turnham's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Vargas breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Vargas wants to clinch up but Turnham keeps it at a distance.
Turnham dips to his left and cracks Vargas with an uppercut!


It looks like Oxygen Vargas has been cut.
Turnham misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Turnham closes the distance and clinches up with Vargas, looking for a takedown. Turnham pushes Vargas against the cage but Vargas circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Turnham gets tackled into the cage by Vargas. Vargas maintains the clinch.

Vargas misses with a takedown attempt
and Turnham counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Turnham fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Vargas avoids it really well and circles away.
Turnham dives in and grabs Vargas's left leg, looking for a takedown. Vargas pushes down on Turnham's head and hops out.

Turnham instigates a clinch.
A frustrated look appears on Turnham's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Shane Turnham seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Turnham shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Vargas as he avoids it easily.
Turnham shoots in looking for a takedown but Vargas manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Turnham's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Vargas stalks Turnham and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Turnham's face. Turnham staggers backwards, shaken.
Vargas shoots in for a takedown but Turnham shows good takedown defense.
Turnham tries to clinch up but Vargas circles away and keeps his distance.
Turnham tries for a takedown but Vargas sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Vargas closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Turnham looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Vargas tries to score a body lock takedown but Turnham shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Turnham tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Vargas smiles and moves away.
Turnham misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Turnham looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
The fight stays on the outside here - Turnham looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Turnham tries to clinch up
and Vargas counters with a head kick. That will keep Turnham thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
Turnham tries to bum rush Vargas with a series of wild strikes but Vargas uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Turnham is looking to control Vargas's arms but Vargas gets an underhook and turns him. Now Turnham has his back to the cage.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

A close second round but Shane Turnham will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Vargas is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Turnham takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Vargas jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Turnham walks away with a smile on his face. Vargas gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Vargas shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Turnham pinned against the cage. Turnham gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Turnham looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Vargas is fending him off so far but Turnham persists. Nope, Vargas circles away and we're back to standing.

Turnham ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Vargas moves away.

Vargas wants to get back to his feet but Turnham is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Turnham cracks Vargas with a solid left hand.
Oxygen Vargas overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Turnham wants to stand but Vargas has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Oxygen Vargas.
I think Vargas has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
