PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Tommy Hearns (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tom Possible (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Possible has chosen Like I Never Left as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tommy Hearns!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tom Possible!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Possible misses with a takedown
and Hearns counters with a two punch combo.
Hearns tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Possible was well out of range. Poor timing from Hearns.
Hearns throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Possible gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Hearns counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Hearns drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Hearns is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Possible wants to sweep here but Hearns controlling him for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hearns trying to move into half guard but instead Possible has managed to sweep!
Possible won't allow Hearns to get back to his feet.
Possible passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Hearns wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Possible is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Hearns knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Possible tries for a kimura but Hearns is defending well.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Possible looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Hearns is in all sorts of trouble here.

Possible with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Possible is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Hearns pushes Possible off looking to stand but Possible dives back in and keeps control.
Possible wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hearns keeps working.

Hearns pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Possible looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
No joy there for Possible, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Possible tries for a takedown but Hearns circles away easily
and Hearns counters with a lovely straight right hand!

and Hearns counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Possible keeping full guard, as Hearns tries to pass.
Hearns thows a big elbow that misses.
Hearns throwing strikes but missing.
Possible is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Hearns knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Possible on the ground.

Hearns working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Hearns trying to stand up but can't free himself from Possible's guard.
Hearns throws a strike but Possible rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Hearns throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Possible sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Hearns's guard.
Hearns wants to get back to his feet.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Possible is working for a kimura but Hearns is defending it quite comfortably.
Hearns blocking the ground and pound attempt from Possible.

Possible wants to work for an arm triangle but Hearns is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Tom Possible has got the better of the ground game so far.
Hearns has a hand on Possible's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Possible takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!

Possible postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Hearns looks a forlorn figure.
Hearns is desperately trying to improve his position but Possible has a good base and remains in mount.
Possible trying to control but Hearns is having none of it.

Possible is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Hearns to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Hearns shrugs it off.
Possible thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Hearns slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tom Possible showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Possible has his takedown stuffed
and Hearns counters with a straight right hand.
Hearns throws a hook but Possible blocks it.
A punch combination from Possible misses.
Hearns has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Possible.
Possible fails with the takedown

and Hearns decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Possible's guard.

Hearns throws a strike but Possible rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Possible takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Possible stopping the sweep attempt from Hearns.
Possible throws a big right hand that misses.
Possible stands up over Hearns, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Possible drops back looking for a leg! Hearns is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Hearns manages to kick Possible off! Possible jumps back into Hearns's guard.
Hearns keeping moving, preventing Possible from controlling successfully.
Hearns is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Possible is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Possible prevents Hearns from getting back to his feet.
Hearns is trying to control the position but Possible postures up.
Hearns looking for a sweep. Not yet Hearns, not yet.
Possible won't allow Hearns to get back to his feet.
Possible wants to control from the top but Hearns keeps moving.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Tommy Hearns wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Hearns shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Possible is trying to defend but Hearns finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Hearns throws a strike but Possible avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Possible is on top in guard.
Possible trying to control the position from guard on top but Hearns is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Hearns is looking to stand up but Possible isn't so interested in that idea.
Tommy Hearns has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Hearns will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Tom Possible.
Possible swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Hearns counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Hearns not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Hearns connects with a nice short shot to Possible's temple.
Well, if Hearns is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
