The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Monson moves to clinch but Savage breaks away

and Savage counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Monson moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Monson wants to stand up but Savage is controlling him.
Savage must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Monson throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

Monson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Savage drops back looking for a leg! Monson is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Monson manages to kick Savage off! Savage jumps back into Monson's guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Savage tries to roll over but Monson keeps him under control.
Savage really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Monson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Monson is looking to take a break and control but Savage is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
