PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Vaughn Dez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Merlin Sawyer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Merlin Sawyer was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Vaughn Dez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Merlin Sawyer!
The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Dez has his takedown stuffed

and Sawyer counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Sawyer trying to control the position from guard on top but Dez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Sawyer got a little sloppy there for a moment and Dez has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Sawyer has managed to get both his arms back between Dez's legs - danger averted.
Sawyer thows a big elbow that misses.
Sawyer is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Dez is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Sawyer defends well.

Sawyer wants to stand and escape but instead Dez has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Sawyer has a closed guard, preventing Dez from standing up.

Dez drops back looking for a leg! Sawyer is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Sawyer manages to kick Dez off! Dez jumps back into Sawyer's guard.
Dez wants to control from the top but Sawyer keeps moving.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Dez postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Dez pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Sawyer is keeping the position for now.

Dez stands up and waves to Sawyer to follow him.

Sawyer moves into range and clinches up with Dez.
Dez tries to pull guard but Sawyer won't allow it.

and Sawyer decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Dez's guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Vaughn Dez. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Dez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Sawyer defends it easily.
Sawyer trying to control but Dez is working from the bottom.

Dez looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Dez wants to sweep here but Sawyer controlling him for the moment.

Sawyer slips nicely into half guard.

Dez is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Sawyer pulls his head out easily.
Dez won't allow Sawyer to pass to mount.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Sawyer prevents Dez from improving his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Vaughn Dez will probably get the nod.

Sawyer shoots in and gets a takedown into Dez's guard.
Dez wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Sawyer is now in half guard.
Sawyer wants to free his trapped foot but Dez is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Sawyer is stalling here. Dez is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Sawyer seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Dez has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Sawyer struggling a bit here.
Dez throws a strike aimed at the side of Sawyer's head but Sawyer avoids it well.
Sawyer stops Dez from passing to mount.
Vaughn Dez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Dez working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Dez wants to stand but Sawyer is controlling his arm.

Dez in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... Sawyer is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
