PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Mark Sibayan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Yip Hong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sibayan kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Stand up and shout. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Mark Sibayan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Yip Hong!
The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Nard Betker and Paul Aken.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sibayan circles away from the clinch attempt
enabling Sibayan to counter with a crisp jab.

Sibayan forces Hong back against the cage and clinches.
Sibayan keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Hong's efforts to push away.

Sibayan jumps into guard, dragging Hong to the mat.
Sibayan keeping moving, preventing Hong from controlling successfully.
Hong stopping the sweep attempt from Sibayan.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hong advances to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hong is looking to take a break and control but Sibayan is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hong keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Hong not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Hong is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Sibayan still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Sibayan has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!
Hong is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Hong tries to get to full guard but Sibayan has control of the leg.

Hong is positioning himself well to prevent Sibayan advancing to mount.
Hong is trying to maintain the position but Sibayan is very close to passing his half guard.
Hong is refusing to be controlled, as Sibayan sits in half guard.

Mark Sibayan has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Hong is keen to just control but Sibayan is a slippery customer.

Hong is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Well, if Hong is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Hong prevents Sibayan from improving his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Yip Hong dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Sibayan moves into the clinch.
Sibayan jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Hong walks away with a smile on his face. Sibayan gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Sibayan changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Hong tries to avoid it but Sibayan manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Hong to the ground. Hong escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Hong fails with the takedown

and Sibayan counters with a takedown into side control.
Hong tries to bench press Sibayan off him but Sibayan keeps the position.
Hong wants to control but Sibayan postures up.
Hong sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Sibayan perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Hong has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Sibayan is working away from the top position though.
Hong is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Hong cracks the inside of Sibayan's front leg.
Sibayan shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Hong counters with a single leg into guard. Sibayan didn't expect that.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mark Sibayan. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hong is looking to stand up but Sibayan won't let him.
Hong wants to control from the top but Sibayan keeps moving.
Hong working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.

Hong throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Hong trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Hong wants to control from the top but Sibayan keeps moving.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Yip Hong wasn't active enough on the ground.
Hong fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Sibayan manages to avoid it.
Hong shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Sibayan sprawls well. Sibayan wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Hong gets slowly back to his feet.
Hong tries to clinch but Sibayan moves out of range.
Hong wants to clinch up but Sibayan keeps it at a distance.
Hong shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Yip Hong will probably get the nod - 10:9.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Hong misses with a takedown

and Sibayan counters with a single leg into guard. Hong didn't expect that.
Hong bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sibayan's guard.
Sibayan keeping full guard, as Hong tries to pass.
Hong wants to stand and escape but instead Sibayan has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Hong has his feet on Sibayan's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Hong fails in his attempt to clinch.
Mark Sibayan is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Hong closes the distance but Sibayan moves to the side

so Sibayan counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Sibayan stays in close to Hong's body and controls the position.
Hong trying to control the position.

Sibayan is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Hong thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Hong keeping moving, preventing Sibayan from controlling successfully.

Hong wriggles free and stands up.
Yip Hong seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Hong throws a series of punches but Sibayan avoids them all with ease.

Hong shoots in and bounces Sibayan off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Sibayan keeping moving, preventing Hong from controlling successfully.

Hong throwing strikes from guard but Sibayan blocks nicely.
Hong trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Hong works a leg free and moves into half guard.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mark Sibayan.
I think Hong has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
