PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Shawn Aria (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Strongius Shorticus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Strongius Shorticus told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Shawn Aria!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Strongius Shorticus!
The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Kenichi Hosakawa and Tatsuya Matsuyama.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shorticus scores with a takedown into Aria's guard.
Aria bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Shorticus's guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Shorticus can do anything to dispel that myth.

Aria drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Aria jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Shorticus keeping moving, preventing Aria from controlling successfully.
Shorticus is striking from the bottom but Aria uses the opportunity to pass into half guard.
Shorticus tries to roll over but Aria keeps him under control.
Shorticus flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Shorticus moves into full guard.

Aria really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Shorticus throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Shorticus has a takedown stuffed.

Aria shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Shorticus counters with a shoot takedown. Aria fights it but they end up in guard.
Aria is breathing heavily.
Shorticus is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Aria looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Aria can't keep his opponent in guard - Shorticus advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Shorticus wants to pass the guard but Aria is defending well.
Shorticus working over Aria with some ground and pound. Aria looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

Aria is defending against the submission attempts here by Shorticus.
Shorticus is nestled in close to Aria, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Aria avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Shorticus.

Shorticus looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Shorticus scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Aria is not content to let Shorticus control the position.
Aria is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

Shorticus tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Shorticus has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Shorticus works to advance to full mount. Aria defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Shorticus is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Aria can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Shorticus working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Aria turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Shorticus off and cradles Aria's limp body as Shorticus celebrates with his corner.
