PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Guy Sensei (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Guy Sensei!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Steve Smith!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Winston Howard and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith fails with a takedown attempt.
Sensei throws a head kick that misses
and Smith cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Sensei throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Smith blocks a head kick by Sensei.
Smith changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Sensei tries to avoid it but Smith manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Sensei to the ground. Sensei escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Smith will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Guy Sensei has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Steve Smith.
A head kick by Sensei misses

and Smith counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Sensei really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Smith controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Sensei wants to get back to his feet but Smith is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Sensei keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.

Sensei pushes Smith off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Smith tries to score a power double leg takedown but Sensei sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Smith somewhat.
Sensei throws a sloppy head kick and Smith moves out of range easily.
Sensei misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Smith drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Sensei is trying to get back to half guard.

Sensei is trying to buck Smith off.
You can see the frustration on Sensei's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Sensei is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Sensei is looking to regain half guard here but Smith keeps moving and retains side control.

Smith is trying to get an arm triangle but Sensei is defending well.
Sensei is looking to reverse the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
You can see the frustration on Sensei's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Smith tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Smith has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Sensei is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Smith asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Sensei wants to control but Smith postures up.
Sensei manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Smith works his way into full mount!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Sensei wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Smith.
Smith looking to control but Sensei is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Sensei manages to control the position for a moment.
Sensei is trying to escape the mount.
Smith punching from mount but Sensei doing a good job of avoiding damage.

Smith is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Sensei has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Sensei!
Sensei wanted to stand there but Smith had control of the position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Smith trying to keep a closed guard but Sensei is proving a slippery customer.
Sensei is looking to stand up but Smith won't let him.
Smith is trying to keep Sensei in close.
Smith is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Sensei not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Smith closes the distance and clinches up with Sensei, looking for a takedown. Smith pushes Sensei against the cage but Sensei circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Smith shoots in but no luck this time.

Smith closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Sensei to the mat! Sensei manages to get full guard.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Sensei is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Sensei perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Smith wants to control but Sensei is keeping busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Smith dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


No luck for Smith with that takedown attempt.
Sensei lands with a kick to the temple. Smith shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Smith fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Sensei throws a sloppy head kick and Smith moves out of range easily.

Smith closes this distance looking for a takedown but Sensei circles away.

Smith shoots in and bounces Sensei off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Sensei wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Smith shoots for a takedown but Sensei saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Smith shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Smith was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Sensei sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Sensei has one foot on Smith's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Sensei throws a head kick that misses

and Smith counters with a takedown into side control.
Sensei is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

Smith is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Sensei is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Sensei gets back to half guard.
Smith trying to mount his opponent but Sensei defends it.

Smith wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sensei keeps working.

Smith is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Sensei defends it well.
Smith wants to pass to mount but Sensei is defending the position.
Sensei works his way to full guard. Good work.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Guy Sensei dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. And we move into the final round!

Smith goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Sensei is on top in guard.

Smith changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Sensei looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Sensei is controlling Smith's trapped leg to prevent Smith from advancing to side control.

Smith is looking for a kimura but Sensei is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Smith to get the leverage.
Sensei desperately trying to maintain half guard.
Smith looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Sensei is trying to get back to full guard.

Smith looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Sensei is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Smith's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Smith's back!

Sensei has good solid back control here.
Sensei's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

We're going to have a standup here because Guy Sensei wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Guy Sensei.
