PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Michael Peterwhacker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marcus Monstra (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Peterwhacker comes into the arena with Bad to the Bone by George Thorogood blaring out of the sound system. Monstra has chosen Slayer - Hate Worldwide as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Michael Peterwhacker!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Marcus Monstra!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Aleksandr Martynov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Peterwhacker looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Monstra fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Peterwhacker looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Peterwhacker has taken the fight to the clinch.
Peterwhacker misses with a hook from the clinch.

Peterwhacker jumps guard and drags Monstra to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Monstra looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Peterwhacker has Monstra pulled in close to control his posture.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Monstra sitting in guard, not really doing much.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Peterwhacker is trying to keep Monstra in close.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Peterwhacker throws a left and a right that both miss
and Monstra makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Monstra misses with a double jab.
Peterwhacker avoids a punch combination nicely.
A thudding body kick lands there by Peterwhacker!
Peterwhacker tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Monstra manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Peterwhacker throws a series of punches but Monstra avoids them all with ease.
Sloppy strikes from Monstra. Those never looked like landing.
Monstra connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Peterwhacker's hands.

Peterwhacker looks to score with a jab to the body but Monstra is just out of range.

Monstra takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Monstra cracks Peterwhacker with an open hand slap.
Peterwhacker is looking to clinch.
Peterwhacker ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Monstra moves away.
Monstra lands with a hook. Peterwhacker tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Monstra avoids a kick to the body.
Peterwhacker keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Monstra.

Peterwhacker shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Peterwhacker showed some decent athleticism there.

Peterwhacker wants to pass to mount but Monstra is defending the position.

Peterwhacker throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Monstra has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Peterwhacker is working away from the top position though.
Monstra is positioning himself well to prevent Peterwhacker advancing to mount.
Monstra has hold of Peterwhacker's hands but Peterwhacker slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Peterwhacker not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Peterwhacker seems to be looking for submissions.
Peterwhacker prevents Monstra from standing back up.

Monstra wants to control but Peterwhacker is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Monstra is not content to let Peterwhacker control the position.

Monstra has hold of Peterwhacker's hands but Peterwhacker slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Peterwhacker is working for a submission of some sort.
Monstra is in trouble now - Peterwhacker has advanced to mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Marcus Monstra will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Peterwhacker uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Monstra.
Peterwhacker misses with a kick to the body
and Monstra counters with a straight right hand.

Peterwhacker closes the distance and pushes Monstra back into the cage.
Peterwhacker working aggressively here.

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Peterwhacker creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Peterwhacker throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.
Monstra is looking to break free of the clinch but Peterwhacker has double underhooks.
Monstra has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
A nice right hand lands inside from Peterwhacker.

The fight stays on the outside here - Peterwhacker looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Peterwhacker shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Monstra manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Peterwhacker has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Peterwhacker lands a couple of elbows.
Peterwhacker stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Monstra swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Peterwhacker slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Peterwhacker in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Monstra is looking to reverse the position.
Peterwhacker moves into full mount!
Peterwhacker thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.

Peterwhacker throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Peterwhacker is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Monstra can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Peterwhacker throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Monstra because Peterwhacker loaded up on that one.
Poor strikes thrown by Peterwhacker there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

It looks like Marcus Monstra has been cut.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Peterwhacker here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Peterwhacker goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Monstra turns into him and now he's in Peterwhacker's guard.

Monstra stalks Peterwhacker and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Peterwhacker's face. Peterwhacker staggers backwards, shaken.
Peterwhacker shoots in for a double leg but Monstra sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Monstra punishes Peterwhacker's body with a nice straight punch.
Marcus Monstra seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Monstra moves out of range as Peterwhacker throws a body kick.
Monstra misses with a left hand
and Peterwhacker counters with a good low kick that Monstra was not able to check.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Monstra is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Monstra's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Michael Peterwhacker overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Monstra avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Peterwhacker trying to control but Monstra is working from the bottom.
Peterwhacker throws a big right hand that misses.
Monstra bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Peterwhacker's guard.

Peterwhacker has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Monstra is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Peterwhacker.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Peterwhacker is looking for a sweep.

Marcus Monstra comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Monstra has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
