PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Reggie Lythgoe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Duirmund OBrien (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Reggie Lythgoe!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Duirmund OBrien!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, James Glass and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
OBrien shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Lythgoe pinned against the cage. Lythgoe gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
OBrien shoots for a takedown but Lythgoe saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Nice sprawl there from Lythgoe as OBrien shoots in.
Reggie Lythgoe has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Duirmund OBrien.
OBrien shoots for a double leg takedown but Lythgoe sprawls well. He's pushed OBrien's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Lythgoe closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Lythgoe thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
An elbow from Lythgoe crashes against the mat.

Lythgoe tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Lythgoe has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Lythgoe decides to stand up, so the ref orders OBrien to his feet.

OBrien with a poor takedown

and Lythgoe counters with a nice double leg into side control. OBrien won't be happy with that.
Lythgoe sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but OBrien is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Lythgoe connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused OBrien some visible discomfort.
OBrien tries to buck Lythgoe off but Lythgoe is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
OBrien is trying to control Lythgoe's posture but Lythgoe avoids it.
OBrien is looking for a sweep.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
OBrien wants to clinch

and Lythgoe counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Lythgoe slows the pace down in half guard.

Lythgoe takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
OBrien throws a series of punches but Lythgoe avoids them all with ease.

OBrien closes the distance and clinches.
A right hook to the body lands for OBrien.
OBrien wants to break free but Lythgoe has control.

OBrien manages to pull guard.
OBrien looking for a sweep. Not yet OBrien, not yet.

Lythgoe gets to his feet - OBrien follows without any prompting.
OBrien shoots and misses

so Lythgoe counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

OBrien looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
OBrien keeping full guard, as Lythgoe tries to pass.

OBrien looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
OBrien is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Lythgoe drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Lythgoe jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
OBrien not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
OBrien has Lythgoe pulled in close to control his posture.
Lythgoe trying to control the position from guard on top but OBrien is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
OBrien turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
OBrien moves away from the strike by Lythgoe.
OBrien throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Lythgoe.
OBrien rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Lythgoe moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
OBrien tries to close the distance and clinch up but Lythgoe swats him away and circles back towards the center.
OBrien shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Lythgoe as he avoids it easily.
Reggie Lythgoe has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Duirmund OBrien.
OBrien tries to clinch up but Lythgoe circles away and keeps his distance.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Lythgoe takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Lythgoe moves into the clinch.
Lythgoe jumps guard but OBrien stands there with Lythgoe around his waist. Lythgoe gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!



Excellent takedown into side control there by Lythgoe.
OBrien gets back to half guard.
OBrien is looking to control Lythgoe's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can OBrien avoid being mounted?

Lythgoe is working for a submission of some sort.
OBrien is trying to control but can't.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Lythgoe wants to lay and pray for a moment but OBrien keeps working.
OBrien is trying to maintain the position but Lythgoe is very close to passing his half guard.

Lythgoe is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
OBrien wants to get back to his feet.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
OBrien doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Lythgoe counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for OBrien!
OBrien really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Lythgoe swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and OBrien is now in Lythgoe's guard. A big mistake from Lythgoe there, giving up the dominant position!

OBrien is adopting a defensive guard.
OBrien manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
OBrien landing strikes, looking to finish!

Lythgoe is trying desperately to improve position.

Duirmund OBrien has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
OBrien lands a nice shot to the head.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Reggie Lythgoe.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Lythgoe, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
