PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Nathan Gould (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Yougin Kononchuk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gould comes to the cage accompanied by skillet-monster. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Yougin Kononchuk!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Steve Erwin and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kononchuk misses with a series of wild punches.
Kononchuk shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Gould as he jumps to the side.
Kononchuk misses with a double jab.
Kononchuk looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Kononchuk has a takedown stuffed.
Kononchuk is trying hard to land a takedown here. Gould sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Nathan Gould has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Yougin Kononchuk.
Gould slips a jab and a cross from Kononchuk.
Kononchuk throws a series of punches but Gould avoids them all with ease.
Kononchuk rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Gould moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Yougin Kononchuk seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kononchuk fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Gould avoids it really well and circles away.

Gould dives in and grabs Kononchuk's left leg, looking for a takedown. Kononchuk pushes down on Gould's head and hops out.
Kononchuk will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Gould.
Kononchuk rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Gould moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Gould shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Kononchuk pinned against the cage. Kononchuk gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Gould has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Kononchuk avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Gould drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Kononchuk gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Kononchuk lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

Gould is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Kononchuk gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Kononchuk is looking to break free of the clinch but Gould has double underhooks.
Kononchuk tries to break the clinch but Gould is controlling the position.

Kononchuk wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Gould is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Kononchuk gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Kononchuk is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Gould goes for a takedown attempt but Kononchuk pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Gould keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Kononchuk shoots in but no luck this time.
Gould slips a jab and a cross from Kononchuk.

Gould gets a clinch.
Kononchuk avoiding damage as Gould throws knees to the body.
Gould keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Kononchuk's efforts to push away.

Gould lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Kononchuk blocking the ground and pound attempt from Gould.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Kononchuk tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Gould manages to move to mount!

Gould stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Kononchuk shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gould pinned against the cage. Gould gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Nathan Gould has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Yougin Kononchuk.
Kononchuk throws a right hand that Gould ducks under and follows up with a left that Gould also avoids with ease.

Gould closes the distance and clinches.
Gould is working for takedown but Kononchuk is calmly controlling the position for now.
Gould has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Kononchuk is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Gould goes for a takedown attempt but Kononchuk pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Kononchuk misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Kononchuk misses with a wild combination.
Kononchuk fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Gould shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kononchuk defends it nicely.

Kononchuk is looking to stand back up but Gould counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Kononchuk.

Gould decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Gould closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Gould is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Kononchuk has escaped the position, nice work there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nathan Gould dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Kononchuk gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Gould gets to his feet - Kononchuk follows without any prompting.
Kononchuk scores with a one two! Gould had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Kononchuk looks to land a combination but Gould avoids it well.
Kononchuk fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Gould leaves Kononchuk with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Gould.

and Gould holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Gould keeps control of Kononchuk as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Gould goes for a takedown in the clinch but Kononchuk prevents it.
Kononchuk wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Gould has him pressed against the cage.
Gould drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Kononchuk gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Gould tries to pull guard but Kononchuk holds him up against the cage and eventually Gould drops back down to his feet.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Kononchuk wants to get back to striking at distance but Gould won't allow it.
Gould is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Kononchuk gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Kononchuk fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Kononchuk is trying to break the clinch but Gould has him pressed against the cage.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Kononchuk creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Gould tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Kononchuk wants to get back to striking at distance but Gould won't allow it.
A frustrated look appears on Kononchuk's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Gould tries for a takedown. No joy.
Kononchuk swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Gould jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Kononchuk walks away with a smile on his face. Gould gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Kononchuk!
Kononchuk closes this distance looking for a takedown but Gould circles away.
Kononchuk fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Gould fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Gould decides to stand up.
Kononchuk shoots in and drives through. Gould sprawls well.

And that's the end of the fight!
Nathan Gould showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Gould, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
