Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 8 - 1, fighting out of New York, Ed Sterns! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Baby J Penn! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penn will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. A left and a right from Penn both land. Nice combination. Sterns throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Penn counters with a nice uppercut. Penn slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range. Penn tries to clinch up but Sterns circles away and keeps his distance. Penn tried to score with a low kick but Sterns checks it. Sterns throws a right and a left that Penn avoids nicely. Penn throws a right and a left that both miss. Sterns misses with a head shot. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Penn suckers Sterns into throwing a sloppy strike and uses the momentum to reverse the position beautifully! Penn is now in Sterns's guard!
Penn drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Penn jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Sterns throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

Penn tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Sterns counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Penn's guard now. Sterns throws and elbow that misses. Penn uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Sterns's guard. Nice move by Penn! Penn wants to pass the guard but Sterns is keeping the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sterns looking to hit a scissor sweep but Penn is one step ahead there. Sterns trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from! Ed Sterns overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Sterns is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Sterns has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Penn can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Sterns keeping full guard, as Penn tries to pass. Penn works a leg free and moves into half guard. Penn is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Sterns defends it well. Penn trying to control from half guard but Sterns is working away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Penn is looking for a kimura but Sterns is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Penn to get the leverage. Sterns moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Penn preventing the sweep. Sterns throws his legs up looking for a submission but Penn uses it to pass to side control.
Penn is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Sterns has escaped the position, nice work there. Penn in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time. An elbow from Penn crashes against the mat.
Sterns is looking to reverse the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sterns parries the strikes from Penn easily there. Penn is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Sterns to escape.
Sterns is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Penn is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Sterns is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Sterns regains half guard. Penn is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Sterns defends it well. Sterns is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Penn is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Sterns! Sterns manages to regain half guard. Good work. Sterns actively working from the bottom here. Sterns is looking to improve his position.
Penn is looking to take a break and control but Sterns is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Penn tries to pass to full mount but Sterns defends it. Sterns is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Penn pulls his head out easily. Penn is keen to just control but Sterns is a slippery customer. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Penn regains half guard, as Sterns was trying to land strikes. Sterns sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Penn defending well though. Sterns perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Penn regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Sterns.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sterns throwing strikes but missing. Penn keeping full guard, as Sterns tries to pass. Penn wants to sweep here but Sterns controlling him for the moment. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sterns accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Sterns throws a strike but Penn rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Sterns wants to sweep but no luck. Sterns looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Penn passes into half guard.
Penn is trying to control the action in half guard but Sterns is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Penn not landing any meaningful shots this time. Sterns looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Penn wants to work for an arm triangle but Sterns is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Sterns looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Sterns tries to get to full guard but Penn has control of the leg. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Penn tries to clinch but Sterns moves away and Penn takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Penn tries to clinch but fails miserably and Sterns counters with a nice double leg into guard. Sterns throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Penn works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Sterns is posturing up here but Penn has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Sterns tries to roll out but it's too tight and Sterns has to tap! Slick submission there by Penn!
