0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Yung Dragun! The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Konstantin Menshow and Aleksandr Martynov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! de la Cruz shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Dragun pinned against the cage. Dragun gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Dragun tries to clinch up. de la Cruz shoots in but Dragun avoids the takedown attempt easily. Joel de la Cruz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. de la Cruz shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Dragun as he avoids it easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joel de la Cruz. That's going to take a lot out of him. Dragun closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Dragun leaning his opponent against the cage. de la Cruz drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Dragun gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Dragun manages to pull guard. Dragun swivels though and keeps the full guard.

de la Cruz has gone for a leg lock! Dragun slips out almost immediately though and dives into de la Cruz's guard. Dragun drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and de la Cruz dives on top into guard. Dragun trying to keep a closed guard but de la Cruz is proving a slippery customer.

That's two minutes gone in the round. de la Cruz controls from within his opponent's guard. de la Cruz stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Dragun swivels though and keeps the full guard. Dragun is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Dragun wants to improve his position but instead de la Cruz has moved into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Dragun is defending against the submission attempts here by de la Cruz.
de la Cruz is figuring out what he wants to do next.

de la Cruz is looking to advance position but Dragun has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount! Dragun gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks! de la Cruz shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Dragun manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

He's being very persistent here but Dragun manages to land a sweep and now he's on top! Dragun with a flurry of punches that miss. Dragun sitting in guard, not really doing much. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Dragun trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Yung Dragun dominated that round. That's time! de la Cruz's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
de la Cruz will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. de la Cruz slips a jab and a cross from Dragun.
Dragun tries to clinch up. Dragun shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says de la Cruz as he avoids it easily. Dragun throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Dragun tries to close the distance and clinch up but de la Cruz swats him away and circles back towards the center. de la Cruz feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. de la Cruz trying to control but Dragun is working from the bottom. Dragun working a defensive guard here.

This could be all over! Wait, no, Dragun rolls with the submission and now he's on top in de la Cruz's guard! Nice work there by Dragun!

Dragun trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. de la Cruz wants to sweep but no luck. Dragun trying to control the position from guard on top but de la Cruz is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Dragun won't allow de la Cruz to sweep him here. Dragun wants to stand but de la Cruz is controlling his posture from full guard. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Dragun trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but de la Cruz manages to land a sweep and now he's on top! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dragun ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. de la Cruz has his takedown stuffed and Dragun counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Dragun. de la Cruz tries to land a sweep but no joy. de la Cruz is looking for a triangle but Dragun pushes his legs off easily.

Dragun stays in close to de la Cruz's body and controls the position. Dragun must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Dragun throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as de la Cruz works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Dragun advances to half guard. Dragun scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Dragun is looking to advance position but de la Cruz won't allow it. Dragun is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and de la Cruz defends it well. Dragun is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. de la Cruz tries to get to full guard but Dragun has control of the leg. de la Cruz is pressing down on Dragun's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. de la Cruz tries to land a sweep but no joy. Dragun wants to control from the top but de la Cruz keeps moving. Dragun won't allow de la Cruz to sweep him here.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. de la Cruz stuffs the takedown attempt from Dragun. Dragun gets slowly back to his feet. de la Cruz fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Dragun sprawls well initially but de la Cruz persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. de la Cruz is working for a kimura but Dragun is defending it quite comfortably.
Dragun tries to get to full guard but de la Cruz has control of the leg. Dragun looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. de la Cruz looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
