The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Albers looks to score with a jab to the body but Kovalenko is just out of range.
Albers lands a two punch combo.
Kovalenko fails with a takedown attempt.
Albers just misses with a punch to the body.
Kovalenko misses with an uppercut.
Albers leaves Kovalenko with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

and Albers counters with a left to the body.
The fighters circling - Kovalenko throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Kovalenko throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Albers was covering up waiting for the punch and Kovalenko finishes the takedown easily into guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kovalenko postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Kovalenko looking to sit in guard and control but Albers gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Albers wants to get up but he can't break Kovalenko's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Kovalenko looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Albers wants to stand but Kovalenko has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Kovalenko is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Albers misses with a few strikes there.
