PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Roy McCartny (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matiss Briedis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McCartny kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Get Money. Roy McCartny could well score a knockout today. He has the power to get to Matiss Briedis's chin.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McCartny misses with a wild combination.

McCartny scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
McCartny wants to take a breather but Briedis manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for McCartny.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Briedis can do anything to dispel that myth.
McCartny won't allow Briedis to get back to his feet.
Briedis preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
McCartny wants to stand but Briedis is controlling his posture from full guard.
McCartny prevents Briedis from getting back to his feet.

McCartny postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Briedis is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of McCartny, into his guard.
McCartny wants to sweep here but Briedis controlling him for the moment.

Briedis must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Briedis tries to free his leg and advance position but McCartny is retaining full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

McCartny is working an open guard so Briedis takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
McCartny tries to clinch but Briedis moves out of range.

Briedis slips a jab and a cross from McCartny.

Briedis pushes McCartny up against the cage in a clinch.
McCartny tries for a takedown but Briedis manages to get underhooks.

McCartny gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Briedis pushes McCartny off looking to stand but McCartny dives back in and keeps control.

Briedis wants to get back to his feet.

Briedis sneaks out the side door and pushes McCartny away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.
Briedis thuds his right hand into McCartny's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

McCartny fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Briedis sprawls well initially but McCartny persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Briedis manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Nice takedown defense from Briedis. No joy for McCartny on that attempt.
McCartny wants to clinch

and Briedis decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in McCartny's guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

McCartny doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Briedis counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Briedis throwing strikes from guard but McCartny blocks nicely.
Briedis is looking to stand up but McCartny won't let him.
Briedis working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Briedis stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McCartny swivels though and keeps the full guard.

McCartny avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Briedis trying to control the position from guard on top but McCartny is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
McCartny is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Briedis dodges the punch combination from McCartny.

Briedis shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Briedis slows the pace down in half guard.

McCartny trying to control but Briedis postures up.
Briedis looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Briedis trying to control the action but McCartny is working from the bottom.
McCartny wants to improve his position but Briedis is controlling well.
Briedis throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Briedis looks to land a strike but McCartny avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Briedis trying to control but McCartny is working from the bottom.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Briedis drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Matiss Briedis has got the better of the ground game so far.
Briedis cracks McCartny with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Briedis connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused McCartny some visible discomfort.
McCartny is trying to control Briedis's posture but Briedis avoids it.
Briedis looks up at the clock and then as McCartny takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Briedis smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matiss Briedis showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. And we move into the final round!



Briedis clinches.
McCartny fails to pull the fight into his guard.
McCartny tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
McCartny is looking to control Briedis's arms but Briedis gets an underhook and turns him. Now McCartny has his back to the cage.

Briedis manages to break the clinch.
Briedis fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
McCartny tries to clinch up

and Briedis counters with a takedown into side control.
McCartny can't do much from the bottom here.
Briedis scores with a couple of short elbows.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Briedis is looking to take a break and control but McCartny is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
McCartny manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
McCartny wants to free his trapped foot but Briedis is holding on for dear life with his legs.

McCartny stands up from half guard.

Briedis rushes McCartny and presses him up against the cage.
Briedis prevents the takedown attempt.

Briedis wants the takedown. McCartny is fighting it off but Briedis persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in McCartny's guard against the cage.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Briedis is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and McCartny reverses the position - he's now on top in Briedis's guard.
Briedis wants to stand up but McCartny is controlling him.

McCartny decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Briedis, up you get!

Briedis shoots in and bounces McCartny off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Briedis lands a couple of digs.

And that's the end of the fight!
Matiss Briedis comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Briedis has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
