The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Maia changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Young looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Maia tries to move to full mount but Young actually manages to regain half guard.

Maia seems to be working for a kimura but Young defends the submission attempt.

Maia looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Maia shoots in for a takedown but Young shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Young tries to bum rush Maia with a series of wild strikes but Maia uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Maia fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Young is looking to stand up but Maia won't let him.
Maia wants to sweep here but Young controlling him for the moment.

That was a close round but I would say that John Maia will probably get the nod.

Maia closes the distance and clinches up with Young, looking for a takedown. Maia pushes Young against the cage but Young circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Horrible takedown by Maia or perhaps it was just good defense by Young which made him look bad.
