PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Randy Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommy Gunn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hughes comes to the cage accompanied by Ozzy Osbourne-Let Me Hear You Scream . These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Randy Hughes !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tommy Gunn!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gunn shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Gunn fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Hughes avoids it really well and circles away.

Hughes drives through with a takedown into guard.
Gunn controls Hughes momentarily but Hughes frees himself.

Hughes gets to his feet - Gunn follows without any prompting.
Gunn takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Gunn tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Hughes shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Gunn but Gunn pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Nice sprawl there from Gunn as Hughes shoots in.
Hughes shoots in for a takedown but Gunn shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Randy Hughes . That's going to take a lot out of him.

Hughes gets a clinch.

Hughes breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Gunn shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Hughes as he jumps to the side.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gunn stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gunn wants it to stay on the feet.
Gunn leaves Hughes with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Gunn will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Gunn shoots in but no luck this time.
Hughes wants to clinch up but Gunn keeps it at a distance.
Gunn shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Hughes defends it nicely.
Gunn shoots in for a takedown but Hughes shows good takedown defense.
Hughes throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gunn's waist but Gunn gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Hughes off to one side.
Gunn shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Hughes defends it nicely.
Hughes stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Hughes wants it to stay on the feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Hughes keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Gunn slaps away a takedown attempt from Hughes , before circling back to the center of the mat.
Hughes tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Hughes doesn't manage to clinch there - Gunn circles away.
Hughes just misses with a punch to the body.

Hughes closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Hughes lands in his opponent's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hughes is breathing heavily.
Gunn is trying to keep Hughes in close.
Hughes wants to stand and escape but instead Gunn has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gunn sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Hughes 's guard.

Gunn is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Hughes is trying to control but can't.
Hughes tries to roll over but Gunn keeps him under control.

Hughes looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

Gunn is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Gunn is looking for a kimura but Hughes is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Gunn to get the leverage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gunn wants to free his trapped foot but Hughes is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Hughes is looking for a sweep. Gunn is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Gunn is keen to just control but Hughes is a slippery customer.
Gunn passes the guard and advances to mount!
Gunn trying to control but Hughes is having none of it.

Gunn goes for an armbar but Hughes turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Hughes .
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hughes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Randy Hughes will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Gunn misses with a takedown attempt - Hughes sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Hughes tries for a takedown but Gunn sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Hughes rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Gunn moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Gunn shoots in looking for a takedown. Hughes tries to sprawl out of it but Gunn keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Hughes manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Gunn keeps the fight on the outside.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gunn is defended easily by Hughes .
Randy Hughes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tommy Gunn.

Hughes fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Gunn sprawls well initially but Hughes persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Hughes with the ground and pound but Gunn uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Hughes postures up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gunn lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Hughes !
Gunn trying to control but he's not successful this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gunn looking for a guillotine from mount but Hughes is having none of it.

Gunn looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Hughes working to try and regain half guard.

Hughes has left one of his arms exposed and Gunn doesn't need a second invitation. He's isolated it and locked on a tight armbar. Hughes screams and taps out, obviously in a lot of pain. Hopefully there isn't permanent damage to that arm.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:05 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Tommy Gunn!
