PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Amir Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Quinton Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Amir Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Quinton Thomas!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thomas misses with a kick to the body.
Thomas shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Johnson pinned against the cage. Johnson gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Johnson gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Thomas to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Thomas stands up and waves to Johnson to follow him.
Quinton Thomas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Thomas fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Johnson sprawls well initially but Thomas persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Johnson on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Johnson tries to get out of the position.

Thomas looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Thomas goes for an armbar but Johnson turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Johnson.
Johnson has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Johnson in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Thomas lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Johnson!

Thomas postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Johnson looks a forlorn figure.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Thomas shoots for a takedown but Johnson saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Thomas is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Johnson's half guard.

Thomas seems to be working for a kimura but Johnson defends the submission attempt.

Johnson wants to improve his position but Thomas is controlling well.
Thomas is breathing heavily.

Thomas uses his free foot to push down on Johnson's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Johnson.

Thomas misses with some ground and pound and Johnson recovers position to half guard.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Thomas lands a nice short elbow.
Johnson is looking for a sweep. Thomas is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Johnson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Johnson.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Thomas's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Thomas stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Johnson swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Thomas looks to score with a jab to the body but Johnson is just out of range.
Johnson shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
The fight stays on the outside here - Thomas looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Thomas moves in looking to clinch but Johnson pushes him off.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Quinton Thomas showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Thomas tries to clinch but Johnson is having none of it.

and Johnson counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Johnson throws a lazy right hand but Thomas sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Johnson lands a really nice looking cross but Thomas seems unphased.

Amir Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Quinton Thomas.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Johnson lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.


It looks like Quinton Thomas has been cut.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
