PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Conny Kofot (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Kay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Kay's choice of entrance music: Sabaton. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Conny Kofot!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, John Kay!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Arvi Lind and Tarja Halkonen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kay defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Kofot.

Kofot closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Kofot lands in his opponent's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kay looking for a sweep. Not yet Kay, not yet.
Kofot trying to control the position from guard on top but Kay is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Kay looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Kofot puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kofot wants to advance to full mount but Kay doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.

Kay throws and elbow that misses. Kofot uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Kay's guard. Nice move by Kofot!

Kofot drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Kay manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Kofot has Kay in his guard.

Kay with a flurry of punches that miss.
Kay wants to stand but Kofot has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Kay trying to control but Kofot is working from the bottom.
Kay wants to pass the guard but Kofot is keeping the position.
Kay throws a big right hand that misses.
Kay wants to get up but he can't break Kofot's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Kofot has control of Kay's left arm, preventing Kay from doing any damage.

Kay has gone for a leg lock! Kofot slips out almost immediately though and dives into Kay's guard.
Kay looks gassed!

Kofot thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Kofot drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Kay dives on top into guard.
Kofot is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Kay advances to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kay working over Kofot with some ground and pound. Kofot looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Kay sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Kofot defending well though.
Kay wants to stand up but Kofot has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Kofot trying to control but Kay postures up.
Kofot tries to get to full guard but Kay has control of the leg.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kay winds up and cracks Kofot with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Conny Kofot will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Kay tries to clinch but Kofot moves out of range.
Kofot throws a head kick that Kay semi-blocks.
Kofot fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Kofot will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Kofot misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Kofot swats away the attempt to clinch by Kay.
Kofot tries to score a power double leg takedown but Kay sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kofot somewhat.

Kay rushes Kofot and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Kay landing some nice looking knees to the body.

Kay turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Kay manages to end up in side control.

Kay has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Kay tries to clinch there but Kofot circles away.
Kay throws a mid kick that lands with a slap.

Kay closes the distance and clinches.
Kay has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Kofot avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Connects with an elbow from the bottom, proving to the judges that he's still active off his back.

Kofot throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Kay works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Kay wants to sweep here but Kofot controlling him for the moment.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Kofot fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Kofot has Kay pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Kay manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

John Kay showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

and Kay counters with a nice kick to the body.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Kofot.
Kay is looking for a sweep.

Kay is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Kofot has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Kofot jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Kay is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Kay and Kofot has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Kofot wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kay keeps working.
Kay regains half guard there - taking advantage of Kofot's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
Kay is staying active underneath Kofot, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Kay wants to improve his position but Kofot is controlling well.
