PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Arthur Albuquerque (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Renato Rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Albuquerque kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is CONQUISTANDO O IMPOSSIVEL. Albuquerque has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Arthur Albuquerque!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Renato Rua!
The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Matheus Silva and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rua shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Albuquerque throws a low kick but it's checked well by Rua.
Rua shoots in for a double leg but Albuquerque sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Rua throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Rua closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Albuquerque did well to prevent Rua getting side control.
Albuquerque is breathing heavily.

Rua is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Albuquerque sees it coming and defends easily.
Albuquerque trying to control here.
Rua not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Rua throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Rua is looking for a kimura here.
Albuquerque is looking for a sweep. Rua is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Albuquerque fails with the takedown

and Rua counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Rua.
Albuquerque is looking to sweep but instead, Rua has passed into half guard.

Rua escapes and gets back to his feet.

Rua shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Rua is keen to just control but Albuquerque is a slippery customer.
Rua uses his free foot to push down on Albuquerque's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Albuquerque.

Rua tries to control but Albuquerque wriggling away.
Albuquerque tries to lock up and control but Rua gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Rua lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Albuquerque tries to reverse the position but Rua maintains control.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Rua controlling from the full mount.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Albuquerque keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Albuquerque is working hard here to advance position.

Rua has control of Albuquerque's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Albuquerque regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Albuquerque is in all sorts of trouble here.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Albuquerque tries to hold on but Rua postures up.
Albuquerque is looking to improve his position but Rua isn't that keen on the idea.

Albuquerque is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Rua looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Albuquerque tries to hold on but Rua postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Albuquerque's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Rua fails with the takedown
and Albuquerque counters with a series of strikes. Rua will be more careful next time no doubt.
Albuquerque has his takedown stuffed
and Rua counters with a one-two to the body.
Rua throws a head kick that misses.
Rua closes this distance looking for a takedown but Albuquerque circles away.

Rua moves into the clinch.
Albuquerque fails to pull the fight into his guard.
A frustrated look appears on Albuquerque's face as he tries to break the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Rua gets control of Albuquerque's arms and successfully pulls guard. Rua will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Albuquerque is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Rua is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Rua has escaped and now he's on top!
Rua stays in close to Albuquerque's body and controls the position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Albuquerque keeping moving, preventing Rua from controlling successfully.
Rua tries to stand but Albuquerque is controlling from the bottom.

Albuquerque isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Rua stacks Albuquerque on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Rua!
Albuquerque is looking to reverse the position.

Rua decides to stand up, so the ref orders Albuquerque to his feet.

and Rua counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Arthur Albuquerque. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The fighters are battling for position here. Albuquerque manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rua passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Albuquerque is trying to control Rua's posture but Rua avoids it.
Albuquerque is not content to let Rua control the position.

Rua tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Rua has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Rua tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Albuquerque is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Rua's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Rua really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Albuquerque. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Albuquerque regains full guard. Nicely done.

Albuquerque is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Albuquerque not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Rua trying to control but Albuquerque is working from the bottom.

Albuquerque tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Albuquerque is trying to control the position but Rua postures up.
Rua throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Albuquerque works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Renato Rua showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. And we move into the final round!


Albuquerque fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Rua instigates a clinch.

Rua's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Albuquerque keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Rua tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Rua shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Albuquerque tries to get to full guard but Rua has control of the leg.

Albuquerque is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Rua pulls his head out easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Rua stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Albuquerque misses with a takedown attempt

and Rua counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Rua is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Albuquerque has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Rua is looking to defend but Albuquerque has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Rua! Albuquerque pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Rua taps out and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:47 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Arthur Albuquerque!
