PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Tommy Mulligan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tyler Meier (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Meier has chosen Cant be touched as his entrance music. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Tyler Meier was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tommy Mulligan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tyler Meier!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Chad Campbell and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mulligan gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Mulligan fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Meier breaks the clinch.
Tyler Meier seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Meier decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Meier wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mulligan keeps working.
Meier perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Mulligan blocking the ground and pound attempt from Meier.
Meier stalling away here and it's allowed Mulligan to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Mulligan is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Meier is controlling him.

Mulligan utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Meier works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Meier wants to control from the top but Mulligan keeps moving.
Meier missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Meier trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

and Meier counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Mulligan closes the distance and pushes Meier back into the cage.

Meier is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Mulligan is defending well for now.
Mulligan is pressed up against the cage. Meier has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Mulligan down to the mat. Mulligan avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

and Meier counters with a head kick.
Nice takedown defense from Mulligan. No joy for Meier on that attempt.

and Meier counters with a shoot takedown. Mulligan fights it but they end up in guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

and Mulligan counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Mulligan.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Meier scores with a knee to the head.


It looks like Tommy Mulligan has been cut.

Meier gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Mulligan regains guard.
Mulligan really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Meier looking to sit in guard and control but Mulligan gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Mulligan postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Meier is breathing heavily.
Meier is looking to stand back up but Mulligan counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Meier.
Mulligan wants to lay and pray for a moment but Meier keeps working.

Mulligan is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Meier sees it coming and defends easily.

Mulligan is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Meier has managed to free his arm - good work.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Meier tries to roll over but Mulligan keeps him under control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Meier wants to control but Mulligan is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Meier closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Mulligan to the mat! Mulligan manages to get full guard.
Meier throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Mulligan is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Tyler Meier will probably get the nod - 10:9.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Mulligan circles away from the clinch attempt
and Mulligan makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Meier is defended easily by Mulligan.
Meier shoots in for a takedown but Mulligan shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Meier fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Mulligan sprawls well initially but Meier persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Meier takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Mulligan is concentrating on defense, preventing Meier from advancing position.

Meier is keen to just control but Mulligan is a slippery customer.
Mulligan is concentrating on defense, preventing Meier from advancing position.
Meier looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Mulligan with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Meier is looking to take a break and control but Mulligan is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Meier fails with a takedown attempt.
Tommy Mulligan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tyler Meier.
Mulligan connects with a right hand. Meier shakes it off.

Mulligan forces Meier back against the cage and clinches.

Mulligan avoids the elbow strike from Meier, against the cage.

Meier breaks the clinch.

Mulligan scores a takedown into full mount!
Meier is wriggling around trying to escape.
Mulligan lands with some strikes.
Mulligan controlling the pace for now.

Mulligan is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Meier can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Meier can't escape the position.
Meier wants to control but Mulligan is having none of it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Meier holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Mulligan tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

And that's the end of the fight!

I think Meier has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
