PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mon Key (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Eugene Kalivas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mon Key!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Eugene Kalivas!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Reed Andrews and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kalivas fails with the takedown.

Kalivas closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Key tries for a takedown but Kalivas manages to get underhooks.
Key tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Kalivas just stands there and leans against the cage.
Kalivas lands a body shot.
Kalivas creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Key's defenses.
Kalivas pushes Key back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Kalivas lands an elbow that stopped Key in his tracks for a moment.
Key tries for a takedown but Kalivas manages to get underhooks.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mon Key. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Key doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Kalivas works on Key's body with a couple of short punches.
Kalivas lands a right hand that snaps the head of Key backwards.
Kalivas comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.

Kalivas ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Kalivas no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Kalivas scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Kalivas misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Crunch! Kalivas slams his shin into Key's torso.
Kalivas lands a jab-cross combination.
Key shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
letting Kalivas counter with a right hand.
A solid leg kick lands there for Kalivas.

Key throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Kalivas was covering up waiting for the punch and Key finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Kalivas wants to sweep here but Key controlling him for the moment.
Kalivas looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Key puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Kalivas kicks off Key and gets to his feet.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Kalivas scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Key is trying to get back to full guard.
Key pushes Kalivas off looking to stand but Kalivas dives back in and keeps control.
Kalivas is keen to just control but Key is a slippery customer.
Kalivas is pressing down on Key's thigh, looking to free his foot. Key is holding on for now.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Kalivas throws a right and a left that both miss.
Key doesn't manage to clinch there - Kalivas circles away.
Kalivas misses with a few strikes there.
Kalivas works over Key's head and body with a nice combination.
Kalivas misses with a two punch combination.
Kalivas stalks Key and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Key's face. Key staggers backwards, shaken.

Key closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Key lands in his opponent's guard.
Key thows a big elbow that misses.

Kalivas wants to sweep but no luck.
Key looking to pass the guard.
Key prevents Kalivas from getting back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Key trying to control the position from guard on top but Kalivas is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Eugene Kalivas dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Key with a lazy takedown attempt
and Key takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Kalivas throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Key shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Key can't get the takedown.

Key is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Kalivas gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Key is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Kalivas trying to control but Key is working from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Key is trying to control the position but Kalivas postures up.
Kalivas wants to stand but Key has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Key keeping moving, preventing Kalivas from controlling successfully.

Kalivas tries to free his leg and advance position but Key is retaining full guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Kalivas lands with a nice body punch.
Kalivas swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Key gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Kalivas.
Kalivas fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Kalivas lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Kalivas lands a two punch combo.
Key looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kalivas is fending him off so far but Key persists. Nope, Kalivas circles away and we're back to standing.

Eugene Kalivas showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Kalivas throws a right and a left that Key avoids nicely.
Key doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Kalivas counters with a two punch combo.

Key can't get the takedown.

Kalivas lands with a light punch inside.
Kalivas scores with a shot to the side of Key's head.

Kalivas pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Key waving his hands out infront of him, looking to distract Kalivas.

Key darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Kalivas is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Key's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Key's back!

Key prevents Kalivas from getting a body triangle.
Kalivas has the hooks in. Key is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Kalivas tries to get the hooks in deep but Key pushed the leg off.
Key trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.

Key rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Kalivas wants to take a breather but Key is having none of it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Kalivas throws a nice looking combination but Key bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
