PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Lars Anderssen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Max Power (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Lars Anderssen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Max Power!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Wesley Smith and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Power tries to close the distance and clinch up but Anderssen swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Anderssen looks to clinch

and Power counters with a nice double leg into side control. Anderssen won't be happy with that.
Power throws an elbow but Anderssen slips to the side and avoids it well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Power wants to stand but Anderssen is controlling his arm.
Anderssen sneaks back into half guard.
Power sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Anderssen defending well though.
Anderssen is refusing to be controlled, as Power sits in half guard.
Power stops Anderssen from getting back to his feet.
Power missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Anderssen gets full guard.
Power stopping the sweep attempt from Anderssen.
Anderssen is trying to keep Power in close.
Anderssen trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
A punch lands to the side of Anderssen 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Power circles away from the clinch attempt.
Power keeps the fight on the outside.
Power will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

and Power holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Power is working for takedown but Anderssen is calmly controlling the position for now.
Power fails to pull guard.
Power drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Lars Anderssen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Max Power.
Power wants to get back to striking at distance but Anderssen won't allow it.
Anderssen lands a shoulder strike.
Anderssen tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Anderssen has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Power is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Power prevents a takedown attempt there.

Power has hold of one of Anderssen's legs. Anderssen is fighting the takedown attempt but Power gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Power stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Power looks gassed!
Anderssen tries to close the distance and clinch but Power swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Anderssen throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Anderssen wants to clinch.
Lars Anderssen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Power rushes Anderssen and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Anderssen utilising his Muay Thai to score with a knee to the body.

Anderssen breaks the clinch.
Power lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

Power darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Anderssen makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

Anderssen has closed the distance and engaged Power in a clinch.

Anderssen has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Power is trying to keep an underhook but Anderssen manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Anderssen decides to stand and escape the position.
Anderssen throws a quick inside leg kick.
Power tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Anderssen counters by moving into the clinch.
Anderssen lands a nice shot to the body.
Anderssen lands a knee to the body.

Anderssen breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Anderssen throws a quick inside leg kick.

Anderssen scores with a takedown into Power's guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Power is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Power looking for a sweep. Not yet Power, not yet.
Power keeping moving, preventing Anderssen from controlling successfully.
Anderssen is really struggling to control Power but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Anderssen slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Anderssen has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Power!
Power is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Max Power will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Power displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Anderssen.
Power tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Anderssen paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Anderssen fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Power looks to land a combination but Anderssen avoids it well.

Power shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Power is looking to work some ground and pound but Anderssen has wrist control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Anderssen tries to land a front kick but Power steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Anderssen clinches but Power breaks the clinch

and Power counters with a takedown into side control.
Power laying and praying for a moment but Anderssen takes advantage and regains half guard.
Anderssen moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Power postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Anderssen manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Power manages to get himself to full guard.
Anderssen slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Power scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Anderssen has his takedown stuffed

and Power counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Anderssen is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Power wants to lay and pray for a moment but Anderssen keeps working.
Anderssen makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Anderssen.
Anderssen striking off his back but it's not causing Power any problems.
Power must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Anderssen tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Anderssen bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Power's guard.
Anderssen is pushing down on Power's leg trying to pass to half guard. Power is fighting to maintain full guard but Anderssen has managed to sneak the leg through.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Anderssen connects with a nice short shot to Power's temple.

Anderssen is looking to take a break and control but Power is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Power trying to hold on to Anderssen's head to control him but Anderssen postures up.
Well, if Anderssen is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Power is trying to get back to full guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Anderssen shoots for a takedown but Power saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Anderssen will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Power shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Anderssen is trying to defend but Power finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Power is working for a submission of some sort.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Anderssen wants to get back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Max Power showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. And we move into the final round!



Power shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Anderssen manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Anderssen looking to control.
Power distracts Anderssen with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Anderssen isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Power stacks Anderssen on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Power!

Power trying to control from half guard but Anderssen is working away.
Anderssen is trying to maintain the position but Power is very close to passing his half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Power is thwarting Anderssen's attempts to control the position.
Anderssen is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Power is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Anderssen is looking to improve his position.

and Power counters with a nice double leg into side control. Anderssen won't be happy with that.

Power decides to stand back up. Power steps back and let's Anderssen get back to his feet.
Power fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Anderssen avoids it really well and circles away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Anderssen closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Anderssen remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Power is looking to regain half guard here but Anderssen keeps moving and retains side control.
Power throws a couple of punches but he's in a bad position and they don't land.

Anderssen lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Power down.

Anderssen working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
You can see the frustration on Power's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Anderssen sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Power is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

so Power counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Anderssen looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Anderssen is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Power postures up.
Power tries to stand but Anderssen is controlling from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Anderssen is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Power looking to sit in guard and control but Anderssen gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Lars Anderssen has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Anderssen moves in looking to clinch but Power pushes him off.
Power misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Max Power is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Anderssen throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

And that's the end of the fight!
Max Power comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Power winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
