PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Humphrey Sloan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Charlie Day (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Humphrey Sloan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Charlie Day!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, John Kavanagh and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Day tries to clinch but Sloan is having none of it.
Humphrey Sloan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Some wild striking there from Day.
Day throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Day shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Sloan manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Sloan has a closed guard, preventing Day from standing up.
Day postures up.

Sloan is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Day is aware though and is defending well.
Sloan keeping moving, preventing Day from controlling successfully.

Sloan has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Day can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Sloan looking to hit a scissor sweep but Day is one step ahead there.
Sloan lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Day!
Sloan can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Day is looking to escape.

Day defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Sloan.
Sloan scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Day is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Sloan looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Day is wriggling around trying to escape.

Sloan is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Day has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Day!

Day would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Sloan is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Sloan is breathing heavily.

Sloan looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Day is looking to stand up but Sloan won't let him.
Day throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Day postures up in Sloan's guard and throws a big left but Sloan blocks it.

Sloan is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Day is aware though and is defending well.

Day slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Day must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Sloan can't keep his opponent in guard - Day advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Sloan looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Day is trying to control. Sloan wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Day might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Sloan kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Day wants to pass to mount but Sloan is defending the position.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Sloan is looking for a sweep. Day is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Day slips a nice elbow through Sloan's hands, connecting with Sloan's forehead.
Day is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Day trying to control the action but Sloan is working from the bottom.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Sloan shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Day holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Day jumps guard but Sloan stands there with Day around his waist. Day gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Sloan lands an elbow inside.
Sloan jumps guard but Day stands there with Sloan around his waist. Sloan gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Sloan jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Day walks away with a smile on his face. Sloan gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Humphrey Sloan. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Day misses with a head kick.

Day takes the fight into the clinch.
Sloan has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Day is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Day tries to score a body lock takedown but Sloan shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Day is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Sloan gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Sloan has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Day is trying to keep an underhook but Sloan manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Sloan is looking for a kimura but Day is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Sloan to get the leverage.

Day is defending against the submission attempts here by Sloan.
Day is looking to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Humphrey Sloan will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

and Day holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Day drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Sloan working Day over with knees to the body.

Day is fighting off a takedown attempt but Sloan is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Day to the mat. Day regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Day keeping moving, preventing Sloan from controlling successfully.

Sloan thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Sloan drops back looking for a leg! Day is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Day manages to kick Sloan off! Sloan jumps back into Day's guard.

Sloan is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Sloan slips nicely into half guard.

Sloan is working for a kimura but Day is defending it quite comfortably.
Day wants to control but Sloan is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Sloan is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Day has managed to free his arm - good work.
Day trying to control but Sloan postures up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Sloan seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Sloan is trying to work for a kimura but Day is defending well.

Sloan is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Day looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Sloan moves out of range of the body kick.
Sloan shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Day counters with a three punch combo that has Sloan backing up. Sloan nods at Day to acknowledge the strikes.

and Day counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Sloan's guard now.

Sloan is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Day defends well.

Sloan had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Day is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Sloan Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Day's back instead.

Sloan has got his arm under Day's chin working for the choke… has he got it? It looks pretty tight! Oh! Day has spun round into Sloan's guard beautifully! Well done that man!

That was a close second round but I would say that Humphrey Sloan will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Day moves into range and clinches up with Sloan.
Day is pressed up against the cage. Sloan has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Day down to the mat. Day avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

and Sloan counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Day is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Sloan trying to control the position from guard on top but Day is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sloan drops back looking for a leg! Day is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Day manages to kick Sloan off! Sloan jumps back into Day's guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Day is on top in guard.

Sloan has his foot on Day's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Day works his way back into a safe position though.
Humphrey Sloan overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Day stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Sloan's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Day shoots for a takedown but Sloan saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Sloan looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Day is fending him off so far but Sloan persists. Nope, Day circles away and we're back to standing.
Sloan throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Day's waist but Day gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Sloan off to one side.
Day tries to close the distance and clinch but Sloan swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Sloan doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Day counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Day.

Day gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Sloan is concentrating on defense, preventing Day from advancing position.
Sloan wants to control but Day is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Sloan is positioning himself well to prevent Day advancing to mount.

Sloan wants to sweep but Day has passed to side control!
Day wants to stand but Sloan is controlling his arm.

Sloan wants to free his trapped foot but Day is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Charlie Day has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Day looks like he's trying to stand up.
Well, if Sloan is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Humphrey Sloan.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Sloan, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
