The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendez takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Mendez's corner calls for a 1-2. Mendez obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Shevchenko lands a left and a right that sends Mendez crashing to the canvas! Shevchenko dives into mount looking to finish!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Shevchenko is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Mendez can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
