This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Tokyo, with a TWGC record of 40 wins and 21 losses; Niles Standish! And in the blue corner, fighting out of London, with a TWGC record of 81 wins and 64 losses; Helio Gracias! The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Joseph Jones and Eddie Farnsworth.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.
Gracias gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Standish to score an easy takedown into full guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Standish (2) vs (0) Gracias Standish seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Standish has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Standish trying to control the position from guard on top but Gracias is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

 That's three minutes gone in the round. Standish has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Standish wants to pass the guard but Gracias is keeping the position. Gracias is adopting a defensive guard.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Standish trying to control but Gracias is working from the bottom. Standish works a leg free and moves into half guard. Standish is controlling the pace.
Gracias is controlling Standish's trapped leg to prevent Standish from advancing to side control.
 That's five minutes gone in the round. Standish wants to pass the guard but Gracias is defending well. Gracias trying to control but Standish postures up.
Standish is looking for a kimura but Gracias is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Standish to get the leverage. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
 That's six minutes gone in the round. Gracias is controlling Standish's trapped leg to prevent Standish from advancing to side control. Standish stalling away here and it's allowed Gracias to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Standish being controlled here momentarily. Gracias not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
 That's seven minutes gone in the round. Standish wants to control from the top but Gracias keeps moving. Gracias controls Standish momentarily but Standish frees himself. Gracias tries to lock up and control but Standish gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Standish trying to control but Gracias is having none of it. Gracias is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
 That's nine minutes gone in the round. Standish trying to control but he's not successful this time. Standish controlling his opponent. Standish avoids the attempt from Gracias to control. Gracias working to try and regain half guard.
 That's ten minutes gone in the round. Standish trying to control but Gracias is having none of it. Standish tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Standish can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Gracias is looking to escape. Gracias sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
 That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Standish prevents Gracias from improving his position. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Gracias moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Standish is fighting to break Gracias's control of his arms but Gracias is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Standish seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
 That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Gracias trying to control the position.
Standish slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Score +3 for passing guard: Standish (10) vs (0) Gracias Gracias is not content to let Standish control the position.
 That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Gracias gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Standish controlling the pace.
 That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Gracias wants to improve his position but Standish is controlling well.
Standish is keen to just control but Gracias is a slippery customer.
And that's the end of the fight! Standish takes the fight on points by 10 to 0. A relieved looking Niles Standish thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it. |
