NGCS - Grand Prix Round 1 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 62 wins and 37 losses; Gul Dukat! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Montreal, with a TWGC record of 8 wins and 8 losses; Phil St. Georges! The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Eddie Farnsworth and Dean Styles.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Dukat looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Dukat moves into range and clinches up with St. Georges. Dukat is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Dukat can't get the takedown.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that St. Georges has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gul Dukat. That's going to take a lot out of him. Dukat has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. St. Georges is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. I was talking to Dukat's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
St. Georges pulls Dukat into guard.
St. Georges working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Dukat doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Dukat manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Dukat will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. St. Georges has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Dukat has passed into side control.

St. Georges is trying to work for a sweep but Dukat has mounted him! Score +2 for reaching mount: Dukat (5) vs (0) St. Georges Dukat controlling his opponent. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. St. Georges is looking to get to half guard.
 That's one minute gone in the round. St. Georges keeps trying to improve his position. St. Georges looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back! Score +3 for taking back: Dukat (8) vs (0) St. Georges Dukat has the hooks in. St. Georges is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Dukat controls the action. You can see the frustration on St. Georges's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
St. Georges turns into Dukat and is now in his guard.

St. Georges escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Dukat gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Dukat seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. St. Georges manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Dukat manages to get himself to full guard.

Dukat has his foot on St. Georges's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. St. Georges works his way back into a safe position though. Dukat wants to sweep but no luck. St. Georges postures up.
St. Georges tries to free his leg and advance position but Dukat is retaining full guard. Dukat is adopting a defensive guard. St. Georges looking to pass the guard. Dukat is looking to sweep but instead, St. Georges has passed into half guard.
Dukat is trying to control but can't.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Dukat is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because St. Georges is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Dukat is refusing to be controlled, as St. Georges sits in half guard. St. Georges is looking to advance position but Dukat won't allow it. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. St. Georges is figuring out what he wants to do next. St. Georges wants to pass the guard but Dukat is defending well.
 That's five minutes gone in the round. St. Georges is thwarting Dukat's attempts to control the position. Dukat is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment. Dukat trying to hold on to St. Georges's head to control him but St. Georges postures up.
St. Georges is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. St. Georges wants to pass the guard but Dukat is defending well.

Dukat actively working from the bottom here. Dukat holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now. St. Georges moves nicely into side control. Dukat is trying to escape the position but St. Georges is controlling the position. Dukat wants to control but St. Georges postures up. St. Georges trying to control the position but Dukat is working away.
 That's seven minutes gone in the round. St. Georges controls the position. Dukat can't do much from the bottom here. Dukat is not content to let St. Georges control the position.  That's eight minutes gone in the round. St. Georges looking to control but Dukat is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Dukat tries to hold on but St. Georges postures up. St. Georges can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Dukat is looking to escape. St. Georges controlling from mount.
 That's nine minutes gone in the round. St. Georges avoids the attempt from Dukat to control. St. Georges tries to control but Dukat wriggling away. Dukat is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
 That's ten minutes gone in the round. St. Georges can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Dukat is looking to escape. Dukat wants to control but St. Georges is having none of it. St. Georges controlling his opponent. St. Georges's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Dukat is squirming around, avoiding St. Georges's attempts to control the action.
 That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Dukat is wriggling around trying to escape.
St. Georges trying to control but Dukat is having none of it. St. Georges tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Dukat tries to lock up and control but St. Georges gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
 That's twelve minutes gone in the round. St. Georges tries to control but Dukat wriggling away.
St. Georges swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Dukat is now in St. Georges's guard. A big mistake from St. Georges there, giving up the dominant position! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Dukat (12) vs (9) St. Georges There's a bit of a scramble here and now St. Georges is on top in guard.

 That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. St. Georges controls from within his opponent's guard. St. Georges stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Dukat can't keep his opponent in guard - St. Georges advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. St. Georges tries to pass the half guard into mount. Dukat knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Well, if St. Georges is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
 That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. St. Georges is looking to take a break and control but Dukat is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Dukat is trying to maintain the position but St. Georges is very close to passing his half guard. St. Georges is keen to just control but Dukat is a slippery customer. Dukat is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! St. Georges seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Dukat does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
And that's the end of the fight! Dukat takes the fight on points by 12 to 11. After the fight, Gul Dukat was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly. |
