Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kai Chen (ranked 327 p4p, 385 weight class) and William Ward (ranked 40 p4p, 45 weight class). William Ward has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kai Chen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, William Ward!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chen misses with a double jab

and Ward counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Chen wants to sweep here but Ward controlling him for the moment.
Ward scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Ward trying to control the position from guard on top but Chen is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Chen keeping full guard, as Ward tries to pass.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chen not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Chen is really struggling to control Ward but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Chen has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Ward can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Chen throws his legs up looking for a submission but Ward uses it to pass to side control.

Ward is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Chen is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Ward wants to lay and pray for a moment but Chen keeps working.

Ward scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Chen to see if he's OK.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Ward is trying to get an arm triangle but Chen is defending well.
Chen is looking to regain half guard here but Ward keeps moving and retains side control.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Ward looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Ward is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Chen is just riding it out for now. Ward eventually gives up the hold.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Chen wants to control but Ward is keeping busy and won't allow it.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

William Ward dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Chen misses with a body shot.
Chen throws a body shot but no joy.
Ward has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
A jab lands there for Ward.
Chen thumps Ward with a low kick.

Chen has managed to clinch.
Ward lands a body punch in the clinch.
Chen lands a hook that snaps the head of Ward backwards.
Chen lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Chen tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Ward trying to control the position but instead, Chen has worked for underhooks and has pushed Ward into the cage.

Chen tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Ward just stands there and leans against the cage.
Chen is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Ward pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Chen tries to throw a body punch but Ward avoids it by throwing Chen back against the cage.

Chen manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Chen working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ward doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Ward manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Chen can't keep his opponent in guard - Ward advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Chen has hold of Ward's hands but Ward slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Ward missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Ward tries to free his leg and advance position but Chen is retaining full guard.

Chen had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Ward defends it easily.

Chen has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Ward is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Chen.

Chen wants to slow Ward down by chopping away at his legs.
A low kick lands for Chen.
Chen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Ward bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Chen ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Chen throws a nice inside leg kick.
Ward avoids the body shot from Chen.
Chen is looking to wear down Ward with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

Chen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Ward thinks about the counter body kick.

Chen throws an overhand right that lands on Ward's shoulder, as Ward tries to avoid the shot.
Chen lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Ward shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Chen as he avoids it easily.
Ward avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Ward drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Chen defends it well.
Ward throws a jab but it's blocked by Chen.
Chen looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Kai Chen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Chen stuffs the takedown.
Chen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Ward drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Chen defends it well.
Chen attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Chen stuffs the takedown attempt from Ward. Ward gets slowly back to his feet.
Kai Chen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of William Ward.
Chen uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Ward.
Chen feinted there with a counter leg kick.

Chen thuds a left hand into Ward's body.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Ward checks a leg kick.
Chen connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Ward momentarily.
A jab from Chen finds it's way through Ward's defenses.
Kai Chen is winning the standup battle so far.
Chen lands with an uppercut that bounces Ward off the cage and back into range.
Chen throws a lazy uppercut

and Ward counters with a shoot takedown. Chen fights it but they end up in guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Chen is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Chen is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Chen is looking to take a break and control but Ward is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Ward is pressing down on Chen's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Ward is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Ward has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Chen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Kai Chen showed his dominance in that final round.
