PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mathew Nielsen (ranked 24933 p4p, 25616 weight class) and Tony Time (ranked 380 p4p, 390 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Mathew Nielsen has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Mathew Nielsen seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mathew Nielsen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Tony Time!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Reed Andrews and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Time darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Nielsen manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Nielsen is looking to clinch.
Nielsen misses with a takedown attempt

and Time counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Time.

Time pulls guard successfully.
Time wants to stand and escape but Nielsen is having none of it.

Time working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Nielsen doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Nielsen manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Nielsen throws a big right hand that misses.
Time trying to control the position.

Time can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Nielsen controls the pace.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Time looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Nielsen passes into half guard.

Time looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Nielsen stops Time from getting back to his feet.
Nielsen is looking to stall here but Time recovers full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nielsen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Time swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Time is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Nielsen is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Nielsen throws a big right hand that misses.
Nielsen advances position into side control!
Nielsen scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Time to see if he's OK.
Nielsen landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Time is trying to improve his position.

Nielsen decides to stand back up. Nielsen steps back and let's Time get back to his feet.

Time throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Nielsen was covering up waiting for the punch and Time finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Nielsen is trying to control the position but Time postures up.
Time is in close to Nielsen's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Nielsen is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Nielsen is controlling Time's posture.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Time stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Nielsen swivels though and keeps the full guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Mathew Nielsen will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Nielsen wants to clinch.

Time looking for a takedown here - he's got it.

Nielsen is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Time presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Time is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Nielsen can't fight it off and eventually Time manages to take the fight to the floor. Nielsen looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

The fighters are battling for position here. Nielsen manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Time postures up in Nielsen's guard and throws a big left but Nielsen blocks it.
Nielsen controls Time momentarily but Time frees himself.

Nielsen looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Mathew Nielsen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Time passes Nielsen's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Time missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Time working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Time scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Nielsen is pressing down on Time's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Nielsen tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Nielsen is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Time passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Time looking to control but instead Nielsen has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
Time frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Nielsen sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Nielsen pushes Time off but Time dives into side control.

Nielsen tries to escape but Time is in control.
Nielsen stops Time from passing to mount.
Time working the head with strikes.

Nielsen is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Nielsen wants to control but Time is keeping busy.

Tony Time showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Nielsen's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Nielsen fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Time sprawls well initially but Nielsen persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Time wants to get back to his feet.
Time has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Nielsen is working away from the top position though.

Nielsen is working for a kimura but Time is defending it quite comfortably.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Time is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Time with a nice head shot there.
Time postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Nielsen pulls Time in close to prevent any damage.
Time scoring with some ground and pound.
Time landing with the ground and pound.
Nielsen is pulling down on Time's head to control his posture.

Nielsen's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Nielsen has momentary wrist control but Time slips an elbow through the middle.

Tony Time comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Time has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
